Digital camera reviews of 1TB 7200RPM 16MB Ext HDDDigital camera Review: Almost a hit Summary: 4 Stars
The verdict is still out on the reliability and longevity of the product, but I was not impressed with one manufacturing detail. Seems that the led indicator light is randomly installed, so the capacity of the drive can be indicated either at the bottom of the display or the top. Whether it shows at the top or bottom is a luck of the draw. The manufacturer does not see this as a problem, but I would rather have had two units with the capacity display from bottom, like a glass of water filling. I use two 1tb drives, one for my iTunes and the other for Time Machine. The price was right to have lots of backup storage.
Digital camera Review: Almost perfect Summary: 4 Stars
This drive has worked great with my MacBook Pro. Other users have complained about failing drives, but WD gives a 5-year warranty on this unit, so I don't see how you can go wrong. Five years is amazing for a hard drive. In my experience as computer technician, I've seen very few WD hard drive failures. They seem to be very reliable units. Most of my customers' HDD failures have been related to Maxtor drives.
I've been using this drive with Leopard for six months and have had no problems.
I have only two complaints about this drive:
1. It takes a long time to mount after I connect it via FireWire 800. Sometimes up to ten seconds before the icons show up on the desktop.
2. The FireWire 800 connection is very sensitive. A slight bump to the computer, the cable, or sometimes even the desk will often cause the drive to disconnect.
Digital camera Review: Awesome Firewire Drive Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this external drive because the one I had been using was almost dead. I'm a photographer and have lots of large images that need to be archived. This drive had been highly rated in the 2 Mac publications I had checked. I always like to purchase products that were designed for the Mac, and this one came already formatted for OSX (requires 10.4.8 or later). It must be reconfigured to use with Windows 2000/XP/Vista.
It includes backup software specifically for photos (which I don't use in my current setup). I use Firewire 800, which is extremely fast. It has 2 ports to allow daisy chaining, a USB port and one for eSATA. Along with the expected cables, this device also has a Firewire 800 to 400 cable, which is a nice addition.
The only negatives I have found are the distracting, sometimes moving, LEDs on the front ... although I can see why they are there, and the lack of a printed operator's manual. Many people might find that last item a plus and not a minus.
I plan to purchase a second 1TB My Book in the near future.
Digital camera Review: Awesome drive Summary: 5 Stars
The mac setup was a breeze. It works wonderfully with Time Machine. The drive had all of the hookups I wanted. The Firewire 800 is blazing fast, I will try the esata soon.
Digital camera Review: Awesome drive. No problems with it. Summary: 5 Stars
This drive is awesome. I am using it on a G4 mac mini running Leopard, updated the firmware as soon as I turned it on and have not had any problems with it. It goes to and from standby all the time too :)
