Digital camera reviews of 1TB 7200RPM 16MB Ext HDDDigital camera Review: Do Not Buy this Drive! Summary: 1 Stars
Like others reviewing this product, I too, wanted to like this drive. Do not waste your time and money on this product. I have a MacBook Pro and I do a lot of presentations which requires a lot of storage. I thought this drive would fit my needs because it had a small footprint, complimented by computer and had multiple connections (e.g. USB, Firewire). At first the drive seemed fine, and then it started to hang up. It's flashing light went back and forth like a Cylon eye in Battlestar Gallactica. It just would not connect anymore. I was using a firewire connection. I turned the drive off, rebooted the computer and that did not work. I then switched to the USB connection and that worked for a day or so and then the drive did the same thing again. So I switched back to the firewire connection and after a couple of restarts it worked again.
So now I am thinking I have a defective drive, so I order a replacement (not from Amazon but from the Apple Store where I purchased it. I love Amazon don't get me wrong.) The replacement came and did the same exact thing.
My conclusion is that this drive is not reliable and I am not going to trust my files on this drive. I am on Amazon today to find another solution. Please don't let the looks fool you, beauty is truly on the outside of this one and the inside needs some work!
Digital camera Review: Do not buy this drive. Summary: 1 Stars
I bought two of the 1TB WD My Book Studio. The first one died upon arrival, and I had to return it. The major problem of this drive is that it tends to overheat and stops working after 12 hours of heavy disk I/O, even in air-conditioned office (78F). The five year warranty is really necessary.
Digital camera Review: Do the firmware upgrade Summary: 5 Stars
I love this drive! I did some research before buying and saw the negative reviews. I noticed that most of the people who had problems had the same things in common--which are addressed by upgrading the firmware and drivers.
When I got my drive, the first thing I did was to go to Western Digital's support page and download the firmware and driver updates. I connected the drive to my iMac via Firewire 800 and installed the upgrades. I configured Time Machine to use the drive for its backups. I backed up my system ~150Gb in 35 minutes. I have had no problems whatsoever, it wakes up when it needs to and has made good consistent backups.
Since then, my wife got a Macbook - and I've set her Time Machine to use the drive over wireless and it works great as well. Naturally, it's slower than the Firewire, but it does work just fine.
I would highly recommend this product!
Digital camera Review: Does not work reliably with Mac - Freezes on waking from sleep Summary: 2 Stars
I have brought three of these drives from Costco now and all have the same problem... Thought it may have been a bad drive, but same problem across multiple drives on different Intel Mac models.
When computer goes into sleep mode, the drive powers down. All good so far. *Sometimes* upon waking from sleep again the drive will not spin up and disappears. The only way to make it work again is to unplug the power to the drive and plug it back in again. This is a BIG problem because I record scheduled TV programs onto this drive.
I spent several hours with Western Digital tech support over many occasions. Finally they blamed Apple for 'not sending the correct codes' to do power management. Funny that I have never had any problems with Maxtor or other drives with sleep on the Mac.
I wish these drives would work correctly because I like everything else about them (apart from them not working). ALAS WD were no help and rejected any responsibility. If they would just deal with it and issue a firmware update for the drive it would be reasonable, but they said they never do firmware updates.
Bottom line - if you have a Mac, don't buy a MyBook - it will give you grief.
Digital camera Review: Drives are Plagued with Problems and WD Support is Lousy Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased two of these 1TB drives late in 2007 and periodically experienced the firewire "freeze" problem. I called WD support and they knew nothing about this issue. The vendor (not Amazon) would not take them back (after 30 days) and Western Digital said they do not give refunds.
Eventually the firmware update (the reseller said one was in the works) appeared, and I applied it. I just recently put it back into Time Machine service, as another smaller drive was being used while waiting for the promised firmware update. 12 hours later, Time Machine is in the infamous eternal "Preparing..." state yet again. It doesn't complete hang the system as before, but system performance is clearly degraded.
Also note that when you plug these drives into the Firewire bus, they take fully 30 seconds to mount on the Mac. I've never seen this from any Firewire device.
The biggest irony here is that this product is targeted to and pre-formatted for the Mac.
Unfortunately I am now stuck with these drives, with the only recourse likely to keep asking for replacements, or possibly sue them for a refund in small claims court or hope for a Class Action suit.
This is a total disaster. Almost $1000 for these unreliable door stops. Do not waste your money, or return them immediately while you are still within the return period.
