This is a great device for anyone that does 3D modeling or 3D Cad work. Use in your left hand in concert with your mouse in the right hand makes for a really fast working space. It really speeds things up. The only reason I did not give this the full 5 stars is because this product does not come with any support. Not even email. You can only post a question on their forum and hope someone answers the question. I have been having trouble with the two keys not maitaining their settings. If you buy the SE of this item, it comes with support. The only difference between the Personal Edition (PE) and the Standard Edition (SE) is price and support. The SE version is about $98 and included support while the PE is about $50 and does not include support. The hardware is identical. The only cons I have with 3d navigator is the software compatibility. The 3dconexion web page isn't smart as it has to be, and to install the rigth software was painful. The software could be better to improve the 3d navigation. I use AutoCAD 3D, and other third party vertical products on top of AutoCAD. The software works in AutoCAD but not in the vertical product. The software/license must to be loaded on the platform (AutoCAD) but not on the AutoCAD itself.
Once you install the drivers in AutoCAD works perfect, but its a little be tricky to tune up in order to navigate ALMOST the same way I navigate with my Microsoft 5 buttons using the AutoCAD orbit.
I will wait for better software and best license schema. Remember 3dconnexion: the people who use these devices are designers as well.

I am currently using the SpaceNavigator PE for Maya 2008. It allows for quick and efficient maneuvering which speeds up my workflow while making GoogleEarth even more fun at the same time.
It's not a necessary product at this level. Once the "Wow" factor is gone, I do find myself still using mouse/keyboard navigation out of habit.
Once projects get to a certain point in construction and depth, the tool becomes invaluable for navigating your space in a fluid, organic manner and for accurately determining camera positions with a natural feel.
As an entry level 3d-navigation device it can't be beat. Set up is easy and calibration is even easier.
Highly recommended.
