Digital camera reviews of APC BACK-UPS RS BR1500LCD 1500VA/865W UPS SystemDigital camera Review: Dell Studio XPS 9000 users avoid the RS1500 LCD Summary: 1 Stars
This review is the first negative one that I've given. I purchased the RS1500LCD (the actual pictured item, not the BR1500LCD as the page title says) because I have had years of good experience with APC. I wasn't particularly concerned that, as the Amazon page says, I could not return the unit. My first problem was in installing the PowerChute software. Forums, it turns out, have discussed the inability to uninstall old PowerChute software, suggesting methods of editing the registry. I finally got the software (2.2 for Windows 7 et al.) installed. Then, upon running the test that put the battery on-line, the Dell shut down, tried to start again, and failed. After 90 minutes, most of which were with supervisor Belton, the best that we could determine was that a)the transfer time of the Backup-UPS was not fast enough and b) the Dell requires a sine wave output from a ups. Belton was most patient and helpful, but the best that he could offer was to accept an old RS900 in trade for a SmartUPS 1000 (which Belton assured me had the necessary transfer time and sine wave output and wattage) for a total (including tax and shipping) of about $435.
So, bottom line: I can't return the 1500 (I accepted this risk based on internet searches for information regarding the unit). Fair enough, I guess. Amazon offers the Smart-UPS 1000 for about $70 less without the hassle of trade-ins. I've opted to order the 1000 from Amazon.
As far as I can tell, the transfer time/sine wave requirements do not figure prominently in APC's literature. Caveat emptor.
Digital camera Review: Disappointed Summary: 3 Stars
I'm not disippointed in the product, I'm disippointed in the ad. When I read the specs it said that it was 50 - 60 HZ. It's only 60 HZ. They have since fixed the ad. It dosen't help me because I'm in a 50HZ country. I guess it will work when I get back to the States.
Digital camera Review: Does Not Work With my PC Summary: 1 Stars
Like the other Dell Studio 9000 owners, this product does not work with my PC. I discovered that earlier today the hard way. I'm working with Amazon now to try to get a refund, but they are pushing back. I may have to try to charge-back from my credit card company. The UPS is advertised to power a PC, but something is very wrong with its output that makes it fail in some cases.
Digital camera Review: Does not work with Dell Studio XPS 9000 Summary: 1 Stars
This will POWER OFF a computer with a power factor correcting switching power supply. It isn't returnable, and if you buy it, and it doesn't work, you are out of luck.
Digital camera Review: Does what it is supposed to Summary: 4 Stars
I've had this item a few months now and we lost power recently (April storms...) . It was great because I was in the middle of scanning/uploading pictures for my mother-in-law's 60th birthday. The first time, the power dropped for a couple of seconds. No problem. Then it went out completely. I just finished the picture I was working on and finished an email I was working on. DSL was still working. Then I just powered everything down. Great !!!!!
PROS:
- Works like it is supposed to and simple. Even my Grandma (were she alive) could hook this thing up.
CONS:
- I hooked up the Cable TV coax and it created a buzzing sound in my speakers. So I'm not using the coax hookup.
- Very short power cord, maybe 3 feet? I had to use an extension cord for an extra couple of feet, gives it a cheap look. Not a big deal, but keeps it from getting the 5 stars it should deserve.
