Digital camera reviews of APC BE350R 350VA Back UPSDigital camera Review: Just what I needed Summary: 5 Stars
When my old BackUPS Pro 650 woke me up in the middle of the night with its peeping I knew it was time to replace it. It was on its second battery and had served me well for years. I didn't need the capacity, and the APC BE350R was the perfect replacement. The 350 is smaller, more compact, cost about as much as a replacement battery for the 650 which meant the price was right. It's serving me well as I write this. If all you're trying to protect is a home PC it is the best way to go.
Digital camera Review: Make sure it is enough for your system Summary: 1 Stars
Before you even consider the BE350R see it in person at a store or go to the APC website and run their selector application to see what size UPS you need. There is a chart on the box that shows battery minutes for different types of systems. If you have a Mac mini and a 15" LCD you might get 27 minutes, but if you have a tower PC and 17" CRT monitor you can expect -- minutes. Honest, that is what is says on the box! This model is not a valid UPS for most home PCS. Hard to understand the number of glowing recomendations for this product on this site...
Digital camera Review: Marginal! Summary: 3 Stars
Well I should have known better...you have to be running a 15" iMac to get the "27 minutes" of runtime. I get about 3. That's without a monitor. Okay, I've got a pretty beefy tower with 3 hard drives, etc. but I expected a bit more. I will give it the PowerChute software performs well, allowing for a graceful shutdown of the machine. So it's marginal protection, very little runtime, but better than I had before.
Digital camera Review: Never buy for OS X Summary: 1 Stars
I am running this on an Apple.
Machine Name: Mac mini
Machine Model: PowerMac10,1
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.25 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 512 MB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.8.9f1
1.) The software that came with it failed to do unattended shutdown.
I am told that native support might work.
2.) There are no patches or newer software on APC website, for easy download.
Support did not seem to know of any patches. That is the cardinal sin for me.
3.) If you need unatended shutdown you are better off with a good surge protector, APC software may puts your system at risk.
4.) If you need very short term UPS with surge protection it might be your ticket.
Price is correct, but I do not like products that say they do something and do not.
Digital camera Review: Not a bad UPS, depending on your needs Summary: 3 Stars
APC, generally, makes very good quality UPS's. This is an entry-level UPS, so do not expect more than a couple minutes of runtime if you have a computer plugged in to it. (This was purchased to provide backup to a cordless phone base station. In this application, the UPS provides 90+ minutes of runtime.)
One thing to keep in mind is that only 4 of the 8 plugs are UPS protected. All 8 plugs provide conditioned power.
A nice feature is that one of the outlets is offset from the others. That way you can plug in an AC transformer without it covering half of the neighboring plugs.
