Digital camera Review: Beware for the master! Summary: 4 Stars
Like the product and the 10 outlets, just not the master outlet function on it.
You need something plugged in for the dependent outlets to work.
When the device on the master is turned off, the dependents turn off too. This also happens with sleep mode.
Just beware where you plug your devices in
Digital camera Review: Clicking sounds Summary: 3 Stars
I've had this product for a couple of years. There is now a clicking sound coming from this unit.
I've read the APC forums with people complaining about the same clicking sounds coming from their APC unit.
I've yet to find a remedy for this problem. I've heard of people replacing the battery, changing the software settings all
to no help. I may have to try another brand if it doesn't stop making the clicking sound.
Digital camera Review: Compact APC Back up Power Supply Summary: 4 Stars
This compact size back up power supply has all of the needed features. In addition to providing power for the computer and monitor, there is one more outlet to allow power for a router or other low power device. The other 6 outlets act as a surge protector or switch. In effect, this one device serves as the power strip where every part of the computer system can be plugged in, so there is one click access to a shutdown and which only needs one outlet in the home. It is fairly heavy and comes with auto-shut down software to sense a power failure and allow the computer system to do a normal shutdown. I do not know how long the back up power actually lasts, but it is definitely long enough to finish working and shut down normally. One big advantage is that this unit also regulates power. My area suffers from unexpected one second off/on interruptions -- not actually a power shutdown, but a second or two is long enough to kill a computer. This is no no longer a problem. Worth the money. I see no need to buy a big tower style unit.
Digital camera Review: Competent device that works fine with OS X Summary: 5 Stars
I asked for 2 of these for my birthday, and received them for my wonderful wife. One for our Mac Mini and one for our Windows 7 machine.
The Mac Mini did not yet have a UPS connected to it, so I made sure to install that UPS first. The installation was quite easy. I did not use the coax or modular connection interfaces, but I did use the Master and Controlled by Master feature and the UPS data connection.
Initially, the Master and Controlled by Master feature didn't work correctly out of the box due to the low power usage of the Mac-Mini. It took me having to read the user manual to learn how to change the sensitivity of this feature to "low". It took me 2 or three tries to figure it out over about 5 minutes, but I finally figured it out and it seems to work appropriately -- when the Mac-mini goes into sleep mode, the UPS automatically will turn off the monitor completely for me.
The USB data connection cable was THE most pleasing feature of this device. My Mac-Mini running Snow Leopard IMMEDIATELY recognized the UPS connection and began to display the status of the UPS at the top of the screen. Snow Leopard provides all of the functionality that I need built-in that the APC provided software provides including the ability to have the machine turn-off automatically at a certain battery discharge point and to change the power usage of the system while on battery. This was VERY cool to find supported by OS X. Very happy about this functionality.
As mentioned above, the other UPS was for my Windows 7 machine. When I finally got around to replacing the old UPS with this new model, I again was very pleased to find that Windows 7 recognized it immediately and allowed me to configure run times as well. Seems to do just fine with Windows 7 as it did with Snow Leopard.
