I recently purchased the 1856 and experienced the same problem the reviewer did as listed in the comment, "warning: when you mount it on the wall, the handset slides off".
Solution: the small plastic piece (less than 1"x1") located just under the handset ear piece slips out. When you slip it out, there is a small hook on one end. Turn the plastic piece around, insert it back into the phone base, and your handset will stay securely in place, even mounted on the wall.
The phone works great!

I needed a phone to replace the wall phone in my kitchen. I didn't need a cordless phone (I already have a set) and I didn't want to spend much money. But I was looking for a corded phone, in case of power outages, and I wanted a digital answering machine. I ordered this phone from Amazon. Got it a day later (thanks to Amazon Prime) and I must report that I am very pleased. It has many features, is simple to use and works well. I replaced the short cord that it comes with (used the long cord from my old phone, the one that connects the headset to the base). If you don't have a long cord, then that is the one item I'd recommend purchasing. Otherwise, you'll have to stand about a foot away from the phone while you use it.

I purchased this phone because the other phones I have were distorting the pacemaker telephony readings. This one has crystal clear sound and that's exactly what I needed it for. The pacemaker tech was impressed!
