Digital camera reviews of Access HD 1080D NTIA-Approved Digital to Analog TV Converter Box

Digital camera Review: Not worth the box it comes in!
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought two of these units and I've spent half a day switching cables, repositioning the antenna and/or the converters and checking Access HD's web site to try to get the two converters to work properly. With lots of bad audio and inconsistent reception (one will get a channel, one won't - but they SHARE an antenna) I've decided I wasted my money and my time. I don't trust the company (after all, they sold me bad products), so I won't be sending them back under warranty because, if I understand their warranty correctly, they can tell me there's nothing wrong with the returned converter(s) and charge me an additional $25 (per unit). Besides, I don't want cheap junk replaced with the same cheap junk, I want a quality product - which is getting harder and harder to find.

Digital camera Review: Not worth the hassle.
Summary: 1 Stars

The unit does not work all that well. The channel scanning is ok, I suppose. Using the same antenna and same TV, it got the same channels as the Zenith. Except, the Zenith took a lot less time to find all those channels.

But, it is slow to start up (sometimes it takes up to half a minute), and it is very slow to respond to on/off button presses. You have to press the button, wait for a while, and then it will turn on, or off. Or, it may not do anything, so you have to press the button again, and wait again.

But, most annoying is that it does not control the volume. You have to use your TV remote for that. All coupon-eligible converters are supposed to be able to control the volume, but this one doesn't (volume control buttons are on the remote only, not the unit itself).

I tried once to see if it passes analog signals through and it didn't.

I also tried to get it to output on channel 4, but it doesn't switch over. Again, pressed the button, wait, wait, wait, ... then nothing. Only channel 3.

We let a friend try it on his 3 TVs hoping he'd have better luck with it. He gave it back to us and told us it was really frustrating slow, and many of its functions were not working.

Don't get this, if you have a choice of getting another one. We are much happier with the Zenith (Insignia is another brand for the same unit).

Digital camera Review: OK reception but problems when unit heats up
Summary: 2 Stars

This device was easy to connect and configure with both amplified and non-amplified indoor antennas. We are able to receive the local major network affiliate stations within 20 miles. The CBS affiliate is 30 miles away and does not come in well. Problem: The box heats up, as other reviewers have mentioned. When the unit is hot it takes a long time to respond to signals from the handheld remote - up to a full minute. Since this is for a spare TV that will not be used often it is not worth the trouble of returning to AccessHD.tv. Would not recommend this converter.

Digital camera Review: Outperforms the Wal-Mart Magnavox Brand...
Summary: 5 Stars

I initially purchased the Magnavox converter from Wal-mart and had to return it as the audio and picture quality was horrible. The customer service rep at Wal-mart said that customers have been returning these since Wal-mart got them claiming the same problem. She then said she purchased the Access HD converter from Amazon and has had no problems. 5 Stars from me as well, took seconds install and outperformed the cheap Magnavox brand.

Digital camera Review: Pathetic device, website just shell
Summary: 1 Stars

When starting, this converter asks for a full scan of all channels, which requires a 10 minute wait. It never can remember the channels from the last 10 minute scan, as if the device has no memory of its own. My wife always asks if everyone else has these problems and shouldn't this be easier to use. Not if you bought this converter.

I also checked up on the reviews which gave this box 5-star reviews, THERE WERE ONLY TWO AT THE TIME, and they were all posted at the same time, and each reviewer gave 5-star reviews to all Access converters, and all were posted the same day and the same time. So I guess these reviewers bought all four converter boxes and gave all 5 stars. Right.

I have lodged a complaint at Amazon, asking how they could let these obviously phony reviews get posted, and they said they'd look into it. But how did such patently dishonest reviews get posted in the first place? I will never trust the ratings on Amazon again. Checking now I see that the reviews reflect many more views, but how did just those positive reviews get posted when most of the people were buying their converters?

Amazon really screwed up in a huge way here, and I'm stuck with their misleading, dishonest posted reviews.

Don't buy this converter or any Access products. Check out their website, you can't contact them online, the site is pure crap, and their 800 number is a joke.
