Digital camera reviews of Access HD 1080D NTIA-Approved Digital to Analog TV Converter BoxDigital camera Review: Easy to Install Summary: 3 Stars
This digital converter box is compact in size and easy to install. The instructions are simple but so is the converter box. Basically, you attach the antenna (not included), connect the unit to your television, plug it in, and you are ready to go. The auto-scan feature immediately pops up to find digital channels.
What I like...
- The fact that it is one of the smaller converter boxes made it great for the 19-inch television in my office.
- The picture is clear and greatly improved in comparison to the traditional antenna.
- The "Info" feature lets you see what programs are on that particular channel hours in advance.
What I Don't Like...
- The unit tends to get very warm after extended use so be sure to turn it off when you are not watching television.
- The auto-off timer does not work.
Keep in Mind...
- You do need an antenna and your current one might not do the trick.
- This particular unit does not turn on unless the antenna is connected.
In Summary...
Although functional the unit hardly has the features to make it worth nearly $50. Unless you are using the government-issued coupon, I would not recommend purchasing this particular converter box.
Digital camera Review: Exceeded my expectations Summary: 4 Stars
I am not by any means an expert with the TV conversion process. I have DirecTV and only use my antenna for some local programming. This product is excellent especially given its rather low price. It is very easy to use and the stations are clear. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to prepare for the upcoming station conversion.
Digital camera Review: Excellent DTV Converter Summary: 5 Stars
Since the converter was $40 - completely covered by the government except for the tax - I was skeptical. However, the device has worked perfectly. Picture quality is good. Unlike other reviewers, I have never noticed it getting even warm. It does have a timer - mine is set to shut off after 4 hours. I would highly recommend this converter.
Digital camera Review: Excellent Value - Works Great - 1080U Would Be Even Better Summary: 5 Stars
Performs as expected. Excellent picture and sound quality. No problems as reported by others. I needed to get a better antenna. Rabbit ears did not cut it. Should have bought the 1080U model. Then I would not have to juggle TV remote and converter remote. The U model is identical but has the Universal remote control included. Now I need to go buy a universal remote control. Great product for the money!
Digital camera Review: Good Digital to Analog Converter Summary: 5 Stars
I read the reviews and almost didn't buy this converter. My Zenith stopped working and I needed to replace it. Since it was so inexpensive I changed my mind and bought two. This review is for both boxes that I bought.
Powering up is a little slow. The speed of changing channels is decent.
The picture quality is good but if it is set on zoom (4x3), you can't see the far outer edges of the picture unlike my other converter boxes. The sound levels are low but at the highest setting matches close to that of my Magnavox converter. Please use the RCA connection and not the coaxial or you won't get the full sound level and will also hear a hiss (as many other reviewers have stated).
The reception is ok. It is better than my RCA but not as good as my Magnavox and Zenith.
I didn't have the issue where the channel settings were lost after turning the box off (standby mode). I've read on one review elsewhere that if you get the version with the rectangular power supply as opposed to the square one, you may have the later version that corrected this (mine has a 03/09 manufacture date).
The box does get a little hot but not so much that I can't touch it (I've had it on for a couple of hours). Seems hotter than my other brands. The Access HD has plently of vent holes top, side, and bottom. My Magnavox has only a tiny vent in the back and hardly heats up.
As for the remote, I got the 1080D version (dedicated remote). I bought a two pack Philips universal remotes (one big and one smaller) and successfully programmed both to work with the Access HD box. The bigger Philips universal can do everything the original remote can do except switching the audio and the signal strength meter. The smaller Philips lacks those in addition to the aspect (4x3 vs the station's setting) button. I've read in some reviews that the remote stopped working. At least I will be able to use the universals minus the few features if this happens.
It isn't a full featured box but if you just want to keep using a old NTSC TV, it is a good converter.
