Digital camera reviews of Acoustic Research AW822 900 Mhz Outdoor Wireless Speaker (Single, Brown)

Digital camera Review: I'm very happy with the speaker and the service. Thank you!
Summary: 5 Stars

Happy with the speaker, it works like it's supposed to. But when it's left on batteries it will make weird noises once in a while. I guess something sets it off and it makes a static noises. Not too often.

Digital camera Review: It SUBSTITUTES a speaker for your stereo speaker, it doesn't ADD one.
Summary: 1 Stars

WARNING if you are trying to ADD a speaker to your STEREO!!
I was trying to ADD a speaker so that I could hear in the kitchen music that was playing in the living room. Since I have a stereo in the living room, the instructions are to plug in the transmitter to the headphones jack (you CAN'T use the speaker output jacks in the back of the stereo). Once you plug anything into the headphone jacks of my stereo (I think this is true for most, if not all, stereos), the stereo speakers cut out. Thus, to get this speaker to broadcast music into my kitchen, I have to stop the music in my living room. Since I wanted to have music throughout my house for a party, this didn't work for me.

Digital camera Review: Just OK
Summary: 3 Stars

I needed a wireless speaker to put near my 89 year old mother's bedside in a nursing home. No wires allowed. This device was very easy to hookup to her Toshiba HDTV.

The quality of construction and the packaging is excellent.

Unfortunately, the quality of the sound is poor with the frequency response very restricted - just doesn't sound "natural". Out of fairness, this could be the audio coming out of the Toshiba headphone jack - I'll have to bring my headphones to check that out. As of now, I certainly wouldn't recommend this speaker for connection to a home theater or high quality sound system.

Digital camera Review: Mine works great!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have the older white version of this speaker and love it. We use it exclusively outdoors by the pool where I have it connected to an XM radio. It gets daily use and has been working flawlessly for about 2 years.

Since I liked it so much I went looking for another one for our other home that will be used in and outdoors. I bought this new brown version and other than the looks it works every bit as good the older one I have. This one I use in a three story home with the transmitter on the third floor and I have no problem with the speaker all the way down to the basement or outside on the deck, easily 50 feet through multiple walls/floors. I don't know why some people have problems getting theirs to work under much closer conditions. I get a solid good sounding signal using different types of sources. I have recommended it to others who have been equally happy with it.

I do not like this new design as much as the older white version. The older one had a nice handle and seemed to be a better overall quality. This new one in my opinion is pretty ugly, the older one was much nicer.

I put this new brown version in my Amazon shopping cart but waited a day or two to make the purchase because my wife was going to add to the order. When we went back to the shopping cart the price had almost doubled! It's a good thing my wife checked with me before completing the order, I told her to remove it, it was not worth $130.

I ended up getting it from another vendor for the original price ($70). This was the second time I put something in my Amazon shopping cart only to have the price dramatically increase before I made the final purchase. Must be a coincidence.

*****UPDATE*******

My transmitter stopped working so because I like the performance so much I decided to come back and buy another and just have 2 speakers. What the heck happened to the price? It's worth $70 but definitely not worth $300. Have to go buy it from someone else for a reasonable price.

Digital camera Review: Not a bad speaker unless you're an audiophile
Summary: 3 Stars

I had pretty low expectations for this speaker, since it's mono and wireless - but I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised by it's design, operation and performance. True audiophiles will be disappointed by the mediocre sound quality, the the large 6-in speaker and enclosure design generates a bit more bass response than you might expect. The built-in battery charger (six C cells) is a nice touch, though I haven't tested it for duration yet - but it's nice to be able to use it plugged in or unplugged. The automatic tuning system is a bit odd, and it seems like it always takes a few seconds or a couple attempts to get it going each time you start it up. Like others, the very bright blue LED on the transmitter is a bit distracting. We've used it with a fairly modest range - 20-30 feet with only one wall (or a screen door) inbetween, so I also can't comment too much on the reception capabilities. The left/mono/right selector switch on the speaker itself is also a nice touch, allowing you to use either one speaker by itself in mono mode, or two speakers in stereo mode. The overall design is certainly nice, although the brown color is a little odd.
