Digital camera reviews of Acoustic Research AW822 900 Mhz Outdoor Wireless Speaker (Single, Brown)Digital camera Review: Not happy with the sound quality of this product Summary: 1 Stars
Unfortunately I had to return this product. The sound quality was too poor even for the backyard. I would give it less than one star.
Digital camera Review: OK but some issues Summary: 2 Stars
The speaker sounds nice when it works, but just some scattered thoughts:
I ordered this speaker to have music on my deck. The original plan was to run music (ipod) from my living room receiver to the deck - which is 50 feet and one wall away. I wanted the same music in the living room as on the deck. The signal wasn't near powerful enough, even trying several different outputs - (and even after adjusting the ipod volume, etc, no luck) - to the point where music just wouldn't play. I do have an older home with plaster walls, so perhaps this was the problem. I wasn't expecting the advertised 250 feet, I understand that it would take a perfect scenario, but realistacally, if walls are involved, expect 20-30 feet. In order to use the speaker, I have to place the transmitter and ipod in my kitchen, which is just inside from the deck. The speaker does sound good, and the outdoor volume is adaquate. I wasn't expecting the wireless sound to be so good. There is ocasional static when someone crosses the line of the signal, or when the sliding door opens/closes. More gripes - once an album is done on the ipod, or any other source, the speaker goes to loud static - and scares everyone. It would be nice if there was an auto mute - the cure of course is to just use a very long play list. Also, there is no sound leveling. Many song files are different, so volumes can change per song. I know this is more of my problem (poor source) and it's not fair to complain of these things since they aren't advertised features, but just be aware of them. The best use for this would be if you had a huge deck, and you actually had the transmitter outside, and two of these speakers on the back corners or spread out on the deck. For $70 it's not bad. I wanted a stationary solution, but now I have to grab my ipod+ charger and move it to the kitchen to have sound outside. Just keep in mind the issues above and that the transmitter needs to be close for clear, static free sound.
Digital camera Review: OUTSTANDING!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
LOVE THIS SPEAKER!!!!! I've owned different wireless speakers for years and they finally needed replacing. I tried several different sets but was not pleased until I tried the Acoustic Research AW822. It sounds great with its 5" woofer, it has excellent range. Also very pleased with the styling as it blends into the landscape. Buy some rechargeable c cell batteries (they charge while installed by just plugging the speaker into ac power) and eliminate the cord altogether! (Note: AW822 is not sold as a set so you'll need to buy two for stereo)
Digital camera Review: Perfect outdoor speaker Summary: 5 Stars
For the most part wired speakers will always be better than wireless speakers by virtue of the power that can be transferred to them via the wires and due to the fact that there is the direct connection to the speaker, which will allow for a cleaner sound. This wireless speaker however seems to be the exception. It took only seconds to hook up the speaker and the sound is super clear with no interference at all. I likely would have considered hooking up wired outdoor speakers, but I didn't have the time or desire to drill conduit holes in the side of my house. Overall I'm very happy with this purchase and can now recognize my overly elaborate plan of having music on my deck wirelessly through this speaker, which is sent from my airport express to the speaker, which is sent from my itunes library on my computer to the airport express, all of which is controlled by my handy dandy remote app on my iPhone. An overly complicated method of getting music on my deck, maybe...but it's definitely got a coolness factor that you can't get from just bringing out an ipod speaker.
Digital camera Review: Poor Sound / Reception Quality Summary: 2 Stars
This Outdoor/Indoor speaker has poor sound quality. There is a lot of static and feedback, no matter which channel I put it on. This occurs when the unit is more than 10 ft away from the base. It doesn't matter if it is inside or outside either. I would return in, but i missed my 30 day window. It's easy to install, but not at all worth the money. Lastly, it is clunky and unattractive looking.
