Digital camera Review: Amana NTW7200, Designed to fail!

After less than 2 years of service (satisfactory, to be fair), my Amana front-load washer stopped draining water. Because the water had not drained, the door lock would not release, so my wet laundry was trapped for the weekend. The service tech told me the pump had frozen up and the pump motor had burned out. He told it was common for these pumps to fail because there is no filter to protect it from the inevitable pebble, coin, or other solid object (as is the case with this washer). Also, the pump motor offers no thermal protection to prevent it from burning out should the pump seize up. Total repair bill - $565, more than I paid for the unit new. Home Depot made it right, and made me a customer for life, but this and the recent failure of the heating element on a brand new Amana dishwasher I installed for a client have put me off of Amana for good.
My advice - if you must have a front-loader, avoid Amana, and get one that has a user-serviceable trap to protect the pump, and buy the exteneded warranty.
