Digital camera reviews of Antec MX-100 3.5-Inch USB Aluminum Enclosure for SATA Hard DriveDigital camera Review: Antec: Stable Product Summary: 4 Stars
So far my Antec has worked perfectly since purchasing it. I bought mine to place an external hard drive in, whose old casing died from a burnt out fuse or something electric. It works at moderate speeds by USB, and has not crashed. It does not overheat, and has quite a sleek black design. Again since I have no problems with it, I would recommend it, and it is affordable.
Digital camera Review: Backing up Windows Home Server Summary: 5 Stars
I bought two of these to house drives to backup my HP EX475 MediaSmart Home Server (AMD Live, Windows Home Server, 1 TB Hard Drive). I'm still giving them 5 stars, but I'll share a couple of tips for using them. There is a power wire running from one end cap to the other. It took me a moment when I opened the first one to figure out I needed to disconnect it to remove the end cap for my drive installation. After the drive was attached, reconnecting the wire took a minute, but it wasn't hard. The wire has a 3 pin connector that was easy enough to connect and disconnect.
The bright white Bat Light drive use indicator is OK for me too, and the unit is quiet with a 1TB WD drive in it. One other thing - one of the enclosures didn't ship with a USB cable. I had plenty at home so except for the fact that I spent 10 minutes looking for the cable, it wasn't a problem but the company should do a better job of QA.
I still give the enclosure a five start review, because it's doing exactly what I need it to do.
One more tip. I put my drive in the enclosure, and while I saw it get added as a USB device, it didn't show up as a new drive. It took me a little bit to realize that the OEM drive I bought didn't have a partition on it, so I had to create the partition and do a quick format. I've done this in the past, but it took me awhile to remember that the drive probably was truly bare.
Digital camera Review: Best External SATA Enclosure On The Market Summary: 5 Stars
Antec is a 2 ton gorilla in the market for computer cases. They wouldn't simply put their name on some junk oem product.
This enclosure isn't tool-less, it requires a Phillips screwdriver everytime you want to put in and remove the drive. But it's extremely easy, takes less than 5 minutes to set-up and works flawlessly.
This device doesn't have a fan, so you do not want to use a drive that runs too hot. But if you team this up with a Western Digital Caviar Green, it will be ideal.
It runs my drive really cool even after 10 hours of operation. Ideal for creating backups or additional storage for videos and music. It also saves you money over buying an external hard drive, by converting your existing extra hard drives to external.
There are lots of horror stories about other external enclosures but this one has nearly a flawless review history on both Amazon and Newegg...so I say you can't go wrong for $30 on this.
Digital camera Review: Best HD Enclosure on the market Summary: 5 Stars
I have owned several external HD enclosures of the years. The Antex MX-100 is the most reliable, well-made, easiest to install enclosure of the lot. $30 is a steal...
Digital camera Review: Best USB external drive I have Summary: 5 Stars
I own three different brands of USB external drives. Of them, this is the best. I took a 500GB SATA drive, already formatted with four NTFS partitions, easily plugged it in, and XP saw the drive and all the partitions correctly at once (the other externals required the drive to be reformatted before they'd use it). When I told XP to remove the drive, it unmounted all the partitions and spun the drive down (the others typically refuse to unmount, requiring a reboot to release them). Downsides: the power and USB cable are both short. It's noisier than others because the way the drive is mounted. The drive is not shock mounted, so you have to treat it tenderly. Still, an excellent product for the price.
