Digital camera reviews of Antec MX-100 3.5-Inch USB Aluminum Enclosure for SATA Hard Drive

Digital camera Review: High Quality
Summary: 5 Stars

Very easy setup and the product works just as its described in the ad. I am really happy with my purchase.

Digital camera Review: Highly recommended!
Summary: 5 Stars

I read all the reviews, mostly positive and deservedly so, but some indicated this thing overheated and they could therefore not give it a good rating. Rediculous. For the price, it is a remarkebly quality product. Solid, sturdy aluminum and well made. I used it for a couple hours and it did not get even warm. For those concerned about overheating, I would suggest drilling some small vent holes in the bottom, putting a fan on it, or just shutting the thing off people!! C'mon!! Regarding the cord, it's no shorter than most. Extention cord much??

Digital camera Review: Honestly, so easy
Summary: 5 Stars

It totally took longer to remove this beautiful case from it's box than it did to install the harddrive and hook it up to my PC. No more than 5 minutes, tops. Assigning the drive letter and formatting the drive was the only "complicated" part and this info made that process a snap:

Digital camera Review: I got what I bought
Summary: 5 Stars

I was looking for a hard drive enclosure, not too heavy, not too big. This one fits perfectly and was what I've been looking for, additionaly its beautiful!...works perfectly and mounting my hard drive on it was very easy.

Digital camera Review: I wish people would THINK about what they are typing
Summary: 5 Stars

It sounds to me as if most of the "negative reviews" of this Antec enclosure are actually negative reviews of OTHER components:

1) It's HOT, or it vibrates or makes a lot of noise? That's the HARD DRIVE you put in it, you moron! The enclosure itself has NO MOVING PARTS. Please remember, folks, any heat or noise is produced by the drive, not the case.
2) Doesn't work with your OS, or fails to be recognized? Sounds like a WINDOWS PROBLEM, not a drive problem. I notice that all the people complaining about this are on Windows... sorry, everyone, but as a Mac user, I have no sympathy. You get what you pay for. There are reasons those Windows boxes are so cheap; a big one is that they RUN WINDOWS.

As far as the actual product goes, I think this enclosure is almost perfect. Solid, stylish, easy to assemble and use, it does exactly what it says. I wish I could say something about reliability, but I've only had it for a few weeks, and since I use it for backup, it spends most of its time turned off. Obviously if the power supply dies a month from now, all the other benefits will be moot... but so far, so good. I especially like the solid "snap" of the mechanical on/off rocker switch; in a world where more and more devices have "soft" electronic power controls, I find the reliability of a physical switch comforting.

My only complaints are echoed in a few other reviews:

1) The power connector for the LED is perfectly symmetrical, which means you have a 50-50 chance of plugging it in backwards. This caused me a few minutes of cursing during the installation process. I'm not sure if I guessed right, or if perhaps it doesn't matter which way it goes, but it worked. Just be forewarned.

2) The "Bat Light" IS certainly shaped like a bat, and is a VERY bright white. I'm not sure why it needs to be so bright (or so batlike). Personally, I LIKE rainbow colors - the drive sits on my desk between a phone with a red LED, a speaker with a green LED, and a monitor with a blue LED. The white actually looks a bit out of place... I was hoping it would be yellow. ;-)

3) The power supply is HUGE. Thankfully, Antec chose one that only takes up one spot on a power strip (its length extends perpendicular to the receptacle blades, instead of parallel - smart), but it is large.

Other than these three minor quibbles, I'm perfectly satisfied.
