I just wanted everyone to know that the price for the World Adapter kit is misleading. Amazon lists it at $59.99, but Apple lists it at $39.00. Even on sale for $39.88, you do not save the $20.11 that Amazon claims. (These prices are as of 20 Oct 2005, but I paid $39.00 for my kit two years ago at an Apple Store.)
If you can't make it an Apple store, Apple often runs free shipping deals. Also, they offer 10-15% discounts for schools (read: students and teachers) and gov't employees.
On the plus side, this product works great. I've been able to charge my iPod in numerous countries with no problems. (And yes, you must already own a power adapter... duh.)

APPLE REALLY SHOULD BE SHIPPING THE USB ADAPTOR WITH THE IPOD. THE IPOD CAN NOT BE CHARGED FROM A POWER MAINS WITHOUT IT!
iPod is designed to go places. However it is only designed to live if it has a computer with a USB interface that it can recharge from. For this reason you need to own a computer if you want to use your iPod or there needs to be a computer at your destination. This is the one major flaw with the iPod that can only be overcome with this device - a very simple, albeit very expensive, USB to mains adaptor. This means you can recharge your iPod at any point that has a power mains, so you can in theory charge it anywhere, however you will need to find another adaptor if the mains standard changes but this is just the case of finding a local power adaptor from an electrical store which costs next to nothing when compared to the World Travel kit (very expensive). The USB to mains adaptor (not sold with this item) is a unique and rare adaptor and is not something I would count on the local tourist destination to have in stock. So if you want to take your iPod abroad, get the iPod USB Adaptor first. If you really want to go all kitted out for the most extreme then you can consider the "World Travel Kit" that has six variations in the actual mains adaptor, but you still need the USB adaptor item if you get the World Travel Kit because it is the main iPod USB connection that the World Travel Kit does not come with. The USB adaptor has a slot to change these mains. The iPod USB adaptor comes with one mains connection depending on where you buy the adaptor (it ships with the local standard). It slips in and out easily enough. The USB connection is a little stiff and requires a good push or pull to get it in or out. To be honest I would not bother with the World Travel Kit and just find a local supplier who can find a mains adaptor that fits onto your USB mains adaptor type. It will probably be cheaper because Apple charge $40 for the World Travel Kit. So it costs $70 for the USB to Mains and World Travel Kit in total. Those prices are almost criminal. I can understand paying for the World Travel Kit, maybe, but the fact that this needed iPod USB adaptor is not with the iPod when you buy it, or this kit, just goes to show that Apple is still notoriously bad at providing customers with a full product. Discovering that you need a component is not funny. Lots of people get their MP3 players loaded up using another person's computer and library. The iPod is absolutely useless for these people unless they have this adaptor. APPLE really need to advertise the fact that the iPod has NO MAINS CONNECTION.

When travelling I seek to minimise the weight and number of items I bring. Technology is one good place where gains on this front can be made. This product bundle is a complete joke. Why so many pieces? Why bring all of that excess stuff? If the answer is "just take the ones you will need for a given trip" then why not just buy some cheapo country/ region specific solution? If you are serious about travel with your electronics (not just Apple) check out this: Kensington 33117 International All-in-One Travel Plug Adapter. I traveled to London for several weeks, and was concerned about charging my laptop from all the mixed reviews I read online. The adapter worked great, and I didn't need a power converter. Granted, it is more expensive than other adapters, but for me I loved the ease of not having to worry if anything would happen to my computer.
