Digital camera reviews of Apple Nike + iPod Sport Kit for iPod nano 1G, 2G, 3G

Digital camera Review: First Sensor, Awesome. Second, Not so much!
Summary: 3 Stars

I am a big fan of this product. Very affordable. The battery issue does suck. My first sensor was awesome. I cal'd it on a track and event cal'd the walking part. It was almost dead on. On a 6.2 mile run, it would say I ran 6.4, over and over. Couldn't ask for better accuracy. I really enjoy the pace feature. BUT....

My battery in the sensor died and I purchased another one to replace it. I cal'd it on a track and everything just as the first. It could not be more wrong. When I speed up to a 6:00 min pace or so it says im running slower like 8:40. When I slow down and do a 8:00 min pace it says im doing a 6:00 min pace. Wierd. I am sad and this problem has me questioning the product. I really want it to work right.

If you are a new runner and have an iPod, highly recommend this item. Seeing your distance is a real motivator. For $30 this product is worth giving it a try!!!

Oh and yes I do have Nike shoes, not the pouch so thats not the problem. Maybe I should stop running backwards, just kidding.

Digital camera Review: Gets me out there
Summary: 4 Stars

There are more sophisticated gadgets to motivate you to run, but this is one of the least expensive if you already own a Nano. The available runner mixes from iTunes could use a wider range of selection, but if I wasn't so lazy, I could make my own mix. The reason this does not get five stars is that I am now on my third sport kit as the first two mysteriously malfunctioned.

Digital camera Review: God's gift to runners...and non-runners
Summary: 5 Stars

What do you get when the two biggest names in technology and sports come together? Pure genius!

I first read about the Nike+ iPod sport kit a while back and was very skeptical about its accuracy. How could there be a device that can track, accurately, the distance I run/walk...and only for 29.99?! I am here to tell you that should that be your greatest deterrent from purchasing the Nike+ system, allow me to lay those fears to rest...permanently.

Cons:

Don't worry, I always like to start off with the bad news first. And its only one thing: you need Nike+ shoes/shoes that are compatible with this kit. As you have gathered, from the pictures, the kit comes with a sensor for the shoe and a receiver that fits into the iPod Nano. However, the shoes typically run between 90-150 dollars...and there is no guarantee that you will like the shoes.

In my research, I read of quite a few folks who found the Nike+ shoes to severely lack in comfort compared to their present running shoes. Now, let not your heart be troubled. I myself do not use Nike+ compatible shoes. Instead, I purchased the Shoe Pouch (also found on Amazon...very easily, I might add) and well, it works just fine! The accuracy is unaffected (I will provide more details later) and most importantly of all, my feet are content!

...now onto the pros...

PROS:

-The Nike+ system accurately measures your runs/walks. How do I know? I tested it a few ways:

1. Treadmill...yup, the artificial answer to running during winter. As I ran on the treadmill, I watched the distance logged by the treadmill itself and by Nike+. I was amazed, SHOCKED, and JUBILANT to find that there was close to no disparity between the two. True example, the treadmill would log 0.42 miles. I would press the center button on the iPod to hear the stats of my run and it would tell me "zero point four three" (0.43) miles. I later realized after my run that the 0.01 difference was the result of a few seconds delay between my starting the run on the treadmill and pressing the center button on my iPod to start the run. So yes, this is VERY accurate. My using the shoe-pouch had no effect whatsoever!

2. WHAT A MOTIVATOR! Before I got Nike+ I started running again to get in shape and to get fit. However, the physical act of changing into running gear already began to fatigue me...who wants to go run and sweat and pant and...well, be exhausted? Who in their right mind? Well, these days, all I want to do is hit the pavement with my favorite playlist.

Being able to know:

-How long you've been running
-How far you've been running
-How fast you are running

...well, it makes you feel so high-tech and cool that man, that 4th mile is nothing! And believe me, I was not the biggest fan of running...heck, it was a battle to get myself started, let alone run for 42 minutes.

3. CHALLENGES...rock. Once you purchase Nike+, you are welcome to join the online community of Nike+. Here you can interact with other run-junkies like yourself. I mentioned challenges...well, they certainly keep you accountable to your running. It is basically a virtual race. A typical challenge is titled: First to log the most miles in the month of July. You might be at home somewhere in Virginia or Texas and be running against someone in New York or England.

All I can say is, spend the money. Instead of buying that DVD that you'll only watch once, or that video game, spend your money on something that will very much pay back dividends.

If you have a Nano already, you only need the kit, armband, and depending on if you don't want the Nike+ shoes, a shoe pouch or lacelid (google it).

FYI, I use the old Nike+ armband...the one that doesn't have a window. Its not a problem to me. If you press the middle button, it tells you everything that the window will show you...and its only 9 dollars on Amazon. I found one for my dad at TJ Maxx for 14.99...not a bad price. The one on Amazon will have, I imagine, a 5-6 dollar shipping charge additional so if you live near a TJ Maxx, swing by and look for it.

All in all, I cannot wholly relate to you how excited and thrilled I am about owning this incredible piece of technology. I only hope that you too will join the ever-growing community of Nike+ runners!

...so, hit the pavement with some funky tunes, and rock on!

Good running!

Digital camera Review: Good Buy
Summary: 5 Stars

The shipment was prompt and the item was as described and in brand new condition. Would gladly do business with this merchant again.

Digital camera Review: Good incentive to keep running
Summary: 4 Stars

My wife got me an iPod Nano as an incentive when I started running, and I treated myself to the Nike Sport kit soon after.

The device works as advertised (I strap the sensor to my laces rather than using a dedicated Nike shoe) and it's encouraging to see the progress on the Nike web site. And it makes you feel quilty when you notice that you've skipped a week without running :-)

The one negative issue is that my iPod would occasionally reboot after attaching the dongle and going to the Nike menu in it. But I haven't have that happen in a while, so I think that the problem might have been fixed with newer iPod firmware.
