Digital camera reviews of Apple Nike + iPod Sport Kit for iPod nano 1G, 2G (Old Version)

Digital camera Review: A Must-Have!!! *****
Summary: 5 Stars

The Nike+iPod system is great. The product works perfectly and as advertised, though it would be even better with heartrate and autopause. Looking forward, the downfall I see coming is that the battery is not user replaceable, but the unit is inexpensive enough that the point is moot, considering a Lithium battery in that size and power would be at least 1/3 or 1/2 the cost of the whole system. It would be nice, though, if EITHER the battery were user-replaceable OR the sensor could be purchased as a stand-alone. They at least need a recycling program for all the receivers.

For those having difficulty getting the system to sync, I have a LOT of wireless devices (i.e. interference) at home, and mine has never had trouble syncing right away. There is a small power button on the unit - anyone with difficulty should make sure the device is on. When I purchased mine, the salesperson warned that he sees many get returned simply because people 1) don't follow the directions or 2) get curious enough about the little "on/off" switch on the sensor. (The switch is used to save battery life if you are going to keep in in your shoe when not running or when you are traveling by plane with your shoes).

You do not have to have the Nike shoes to use this device, though I am running with the Air Max 180's and they feel great. You can attach the device on a pouch or even in your shoelaces as shown elsewhere on the web.

I love being able to hear the positive feedback on the progress of my runs, and that has really helped me to meet & exceed my distance and time goals. This is absolutely a great way to get in shape! This is a must-have for anyone who runs whether 1 mile or 26.

Digital camera Review: A cool device.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a cool add on for my ipod. I have a nano 3rd generation and I can easily look at my screen while running and adjust volume or change the song. The best part of this is the Nike website keeps track of all your runs and makes graphs and helps you set your goals.

Digital camera Review: A great personal coach!
Summary: 5 Stars

This has been a great tool and companion on runs!
It is easy to use, and easy to upload to Nike for progress on my running goals.
I've enjoyed my runs more knowing my pace, distance, and goal is at my finger tips.

Digital camera Review: Ahh... no! Overrated... better options available.
Summary: 2 Stars

For someone who has been running for a better part of my life, this device presented an indulgence that in hindsight, I do not require! First the advantages: It calculates distance, it calculates velocity, and it has an appealing voice that nerds like myself get excited to.

The drawbacks: several. I have a running regime that does not involve a steady stride. Usually I start with a slow jog, i.e. short strides, then build it into a faster, longer stride run and finally a gallop (where as expected my stride would be the longest) to end the workout. The problem is that my stride increases and at times I slow down to catch my breath if I feel overwhelmed. This imbecile of a device calculates each stride as the same. When I purchased it, I thought it somehow calculated distance traveled by measuring the stride length (somehow using the distance transpired between impact with the surface using an inertial gyroscope like they do in airplanes)... guess again! For 40 bucks I was expecting Stephen Hawking in my bloody shoe... I do set my hopes a bit to high don't I?

This is also a significant cash cow for Nike. While you do not need to purchase a pair of overpriced, third world children exploitative Nikes, you do need the bloody arm band to hold the iPod and the attached wireless sensor. Moreover, you need an iPod. Now don't get me wrong but if you have an iPod, this is probably a decent investment. Maybe along the lines of the "jewel incrust your iPod, jay-z style" accessory, but I won't judge you. However, for someone who prefers the quite, almost eerie sounds of the late night or early morning during a workout to Cold Play blasting through his ears, it's a step in the wrong direction. This accessory is not worth an iPod purchase, as I foolishly did, but certainly something worth looking into if you do already possess one.

In summary, as another reviewer mentioned earlier, there is no measurement of heart rate; a better monitor of calories burnt; the distance and velocity evaluators are not as accurate as some of the GPS models. And finally, not an accessory worth purchasing an iPod for. If you do not possess an iPod, and are looking for some means to measure your progress as a runner, then look into the GPS heart rate monitors offered on this site.

Digital camera Review: Awesome
Summary: 5 Stars

It's just great. It just is.

Heads up: don't use the pouch on the same foot every time if you have very lite shoes.
