This is such a cool device with so many neat features! I love the screen saver mode linked with the music of my choice and the hard drive is more than adequate for music, picture and video storage. This is the best device in combination with a netflix ready device. You can cut off all your cable and satellite. Watch youtube filtered on a 55" screen instead of huddling around a little pc monitor, or watch home movies and show them off to the family without rummaging through a stack of dvds. Not to mention the biggest digital picture frame available. no worries with the kids watching content that you have not already approved because you put the content on it.

This is a complete waste of time. I can imagine the discussion at Apple when they were conceiving this product. "I've got it: how about we make a box that people will buy from us and the only thing they can do with it is use it to buy other stuff from us that they could otherwise get for free!" That's about it. Save your money until Apple or someone else comes up with a device that truly integrates content from the web with your TV. This definitely is NOT it.
Reappraisal (3/11):
I've been using this a lot more since I cut my cable, and I am appreciating it much more. I use it to get a lot of great shows that I only pay for when I want to watch them. I actually like it better in some ways than the Apple TV 2. The fact that it has a hard drive is a definite plus because it means there are no glitchy issues with streaming. It still runs hot (enough so that it has damaged the cabinet it sits on) and uses more electricity than it should, plus it lacks some of the features of the new one (Netflix, ESPN) and Apple has stopped supporting it, so its not perfect but still proves to be useful. If you can get a good deal on one it is worth getting.

I've had an apple tv for about 5 months and I think I've actually sold a few to friends and it's not for the reasons you might think. Many reviewers have focused on movie rentals, but I bought this to be able to share my photos and home videos with family and friends. I know it could be called a glorified ipod, but it quietly gives me access to the home movies and family photos that have sequestered on my hard drive. Instead of gathering around the computer to see the latest...we just access the apple tv. It is also as another reviewer mentioned, a great way to access your music collection. By the way I have rented movies and played purchased movies...it works great. For me, 720p is fine...you won't find anything better than 720p on cable or broadcast HD. I also love being able to use my iPhone as a remote for the system. It's awesome
