I swear, you have to have a lawyer examine Apple product descriptions. If you aren't willing to carefully consider every word they've used you'd better take your iPod to the store and make sure this thing does what you think it does before you walk away with it.
I bought this to keep my iPod charged while connected to my stereo. It'll do that if you also have the USB power adapter. I thought I did. After finding that this thing won't charge the iPod while connected to the adapter I did some googling and was reminded that at the time I bought my iPod the adapter that was available was Firewire, not USB. It's functionally identical to the USB adapter for powering the iPod, but the Firewire power adapter does not work with this dock.
Think you have a USB power adapter? Better go look at it to make sure it's USB and not Firewire. If in the several years since they switched to USB you haven't forgotten yours is Firewire then congrats. Having better memory than me won't save you from having to buy the USB adapter, though.
The menu button on the remote? It does nothing. It's not supposed to do anything, so don't bother wondering what it's there for. Maybe it works with another Apple product. It doesn't work with this dock. Not a big deal, since if you're close enough to read the menu you don't need to use the remote. Just use the controls on the iPod. This is where I discovered the next problem.
The dock comes with a number of adapters that snap into the thing so that your particular iPod model fits snugly. This is a good idea, since otherwise when you use the controls on the iPod you'll put pressure on the connector. So, which adapter does my iPod require? That's right, the one that isn't in the box. I'm supposed to get that separately. The web page says my iPod is compatible (there's even a picture of it), and it says there are adapters for some other iPods. Even a lawyer might interpret that to mean my iPod doesn't need an adapter. He'd be only partially correct. I can still plug the thing in, but it doesn't fit securely, as it would if I had that stupid adapter.
For this I paid $50. And Apple wants another $30 for the USB power adapter. $80 to connect my iPod to my stereo. I'd rather have retired the stupid thing.
If you want to connect your iPod to your TV while connected to this dock you'd better read more reviews because, yes, that requires more Apple products, too.
