Digital camera reviews of Apple Universal Dock for iPod (White)(OLD VERSION)

Digital camera Review: BS
Summary: 1 Stars

Don't waste your money. I bought this for my 16 gig Ipod touch and was expecting it to come with the video cable. After ripping apart the pretty box it comes in to get at the cable, I found it does not come with one. So all those $$ just went out the window and I would need to spend another $60 to get the cable. That would have been all I needed to send video to my TV. I also now understand the remote does not work the way you would expect.

Apple should be more clear on what comes with it and what it does.
They get you going with the base product and then sucker you into having to buy all their products.

Save your money and just buy the AV cable if you want to watch video on your TV. Otherwise just buy a Belkin docking station for half the cost.

BTW, You must buy the "Apple" cable if you want to display video. There is some sort of chip in the cable so you can't just use any cable.

Digital camera Review: Bad Apple
Summary: 1 Stars

The previous version of this product had an S-Video output. This has none. You have to buy a $50 cable from Apple to connect it to a composite video source. Therefore, you have to choose between playing video or having the iPod connected to power. And switch between. S-Video is superior to composite, although modern LCD screens will appear much the same. IMHO, this is a complete step backwards that cost 50 bucks more. That's one bad Apple.

Digital camera Review: Big disappointment
Summary: 2 Stars

I just bought a 160GB iPod Classic and this dock with the idea of storing most of my CD collection in lossless format and play through my home stereo system. I love the iPod but the dock is a joke. Like all Apple products, it comes in fancy packaging, including a nice black box and a collection of neatly arranged dock adaptors. That's where the fun ends. Some issues to note:

1. No cables whatsoever come with the dock. No 3.5mm to RCA, no 30-pin to USB, none. So, in addition to the $49 price tag, you need to supply all your cables.
2. To add insult to injury, no AC adaptor is supplied. Docks are meant to be plugged in, right?
3. The remote can basically control de volume and back/forward songs. It doesn't seem to want to do anything else.
4. The audio quality from the line out is surprinsingly lousy. I thought all line out connections were the same, but apparently not. I did not test the video output.

To test my suspicions I bought a Dynex dock to compare. For basically the same amount of money, I also got: 1. S-Video output, 2. AC adaptor, 3. 30-pin to USB cable, and 4. 3.5 mm to RCA cable. In terms of performance, the Dynex blew the Apple's socks off. The audio quality is noticeably better and the remote actually does what it is supposed to do.

In summary: Unless you absolutely NEED to have the Apple brand in your dock, don't bother. This product is not worth it. Unlike other Apple products that match design and packaging with performance, this one really does not perform.

Digital camera Review: Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought Cables
Summary: 4 Stars

It's easy to overlook, but this dock does not include any cables, and has some specific requirements for the AV-out cable.

USB cable: you need to use the one you already have, or buy a new Apple iPodŽ Dock Connector to USB Cable.

AV cable: apparently, you need to have or buy the brand-name Apple Composite AV Cable (MB129LL/B) for older or simpler video devices, or the brand-name Apple Component AV Cable for newer or more advanced video devices.

I haven't tried this dock or these cables yet, but have ordered the dock and composite AV cable from Apple (just to be sure it's got their direct stamp of approval for the Apple iPod nano 16 GB Pink (5th Generation) NEWEST MODEL, which seems to be very particular about what it plugs into).

This is getting expensive.

Digital camera Review: DO NOT BUY Universal Dock
Summary: 1 Stars

Just got my 2nd one; still does not charge my Classic 160GB. Back to the circus of returning this turkey to Apple for the 2nd time. Forget it!
