Digital camera Review: Did not work with 3G iPod

I bought this for my older 3rd generation iPod (15gb). I'm sorry to say it did not work.
With my iPod in the dock, and using either the firewire power cable or a new USB power cable, this dock does not charge my iPod. The volume control was the only thing that worked on the remote. It also locked up the controls on the iPod, rendering it useless until I take it off the dock. The product description on Apple's web site says it works with "all iPod models that have a dock connector." I had to return mine.
It does not come with any cables, so even if you have a newer iPod, plan on buying the USB power adaptor (~$40 with cable), and a headphone jack to RCA connector cable ($14 - $30) if you want to hook it up to your stereo inputs. An expensive solution even if it works for your iPod.

As most of the reviews state, the remote doesn't work the way you would expect (i.e., like it would on Front Row). This takes away most of the reasons to buy the dock. For the price, I would also think that Apple could have thrown in some kind of power supply. So, it's basically an iPod stand with a mostly dysfunctional remote. I was looking for a Dock that would work with my Iphone 3G , U2 Ipod, and Ipod Classic connected to my home stereo receiver. This little dock fit the bill perfectly. It only includes the an Apple Remote, the Dock and 5 dock inserts (no insert for the ipod 3G). I will have to buy a 3G dock insert sometime in the future if I want to use it, but for now my Ipod Classic will live in the dock. Yes, the dock does not come with any cables, but buy an inexpensive 3.5mm to RCA cable and you are ready to roll. The remote seems to bounce off my white wall and adjusts the volume and previous/next track from all angles. I bought this dock for my new nano 5G so I could hook it up to my stereo. It works great! I put the nano on shuffle and walked away. Worked around the house all day and never heard the same song twice. My nano doesn't have video...I've got a DVR for that. I wish I had read the reviews on this site before I made my purchase of the Universal Dock. I only use my iPod for simple music playback, and this product is completely unsatisfactory.
The biggest problem is the the menu button on the remote does not function when the iPod is hooked up to an audio system (apparently it only works when the iPod is hooked up to the computer), so you need to switch playlists by using the jog wheel, which is very cumbersome when the iPod is attached to the dock.
The second problem is that there is are no cables, so not only do you need to purchase a cable to hook up the dock to the audio system, you need to buy an extra iPod - USB cable (unless you want to unplug the cable every time you want to hook up your iPod to your computer or take the cable with you). Finally, you also need to purchase a USB wall socket plug-in unit.
I am not happy that the Apple Store clerk recommended me to buy this useless product for my audio in the first place, and I am even more unhappy because the Apple Website does not make these points very clear. This product and the way that Apple sells it makes a huge disservice to the Company and the Brand.
