Digital camera reviews of Apple Universal Dock for iPod (White)(OLD VERSION)Digital camera Review: Everything worked, included remote is great for third party apps as well Summary: 5 Stars
The Apple Universal Dock for iPod is typical Apple retail quality. Everything was packaged very nicely. This comes with several adapters for the different iPods on the market and worked right away with my 60Gig gen 5 iPod. The base is heavy enough to keep from sliding around, and the fit is excellent using the correct (included) adapter.
A bonus is the included Apple Remote which I was able to use with my Macbook Pro for the neat program called iAlertU, which is like a car alarm for your Macbook pro.
Overall this is a nice package if you're looking for an iPod dock and remote. It's Apple retail, so you know it will work and the fit-and-finish is excellent.
Pro's
-Apple Retail so it works with all their iPods
-Base is heavy enough to remain stationary when plugging in and removing the iPod
-It comes with the Apple Remote which can be used for movies, music, and some third party apps
-Remote gets paired with your Mac, so only that remote will work
Con's
-A bit expensive
Digital camera Review: Fewer Features than Previous Version Summary: 4 Stars
As with other reveiws, one wonders why Apple would produce a remote control with buttons without corresponding functions. While the product charges the ipod/iphone and provides analog connections, it lacks the s-video connection of the previous Apple dock. The s-video worked fine with ipods older than the itouch version and looked better than the headphone jack connectors now sold by Apple. It seems odd that Apple would go backwards with a product, however, it's consistent with the company's goal of seeking more (profit) for less. All in all, I would not pay full retail, but it's okay for half the price.
Digital camera Review: Garbage Summary: 1 Stars
Not worth the plastic it's molded out of. This won't work unless you spend ANOTHER $50 on a component cable, available ONLY from APPLE. And no, no other cable will work, since the connection in the dock is proprietary. The cable, of course, is otherwise just a component cable identical to the ones they sell for $1 at radio shack.
This is a waste of money. Don't buy it unless you want an ugly piece of $50 plastic. It's not good for anything else.
Digital camera Review: Good Dock, Minimally Usable Remote, No Cable Summary: 4 Stars
Wow, some of the reviews of this dock are really harsh! Here's my experience:
I bought the dock first and foremost as a dock, i.e., so as not to have my iPhone sitting around loose on the desk using the standard cable. As a dock it works quite well - it's weighted and has a non-skid bottom. This is a universal dock (not to hard to figure out, given its name ...). What that means is that it comes with inserts that fit most Apple personal devices, and they are numbered and labeled in the clamshell box. Typical Apple attention to detail. I downrate to 4 stars as a dock only because it does not come with its own cable, especially irritating because the cable provided with the iPhone is rather short.
As a remote setup, this item has its limitations. You really need to remember, though, that a simple remote is not going to be able to do all the things the interface on your iPod or iPhone can, or do them in the same way. Some results are even a little unexpected until you get used to them. Still usable.
Digital camera Review: How pathetic Summary: 1 Stars
How greedy are these people? Why not include this piece of plastic in the box with the IPOD? Not only that, you still don't get any cables with this!!! They are *another* $50.00! The "Composite Cable" from Apple doesn't even let you adjust the audio out. It puts the level indicator on the screen when you move the click wheel, but doesn't adjust the levels, and the cable won't charge the IPOD or allow you to sync it either. How frustrating - trying to get all the cables you need to use your IPOD can take weeks... and hundreds of dollars. WHY? Apple sucks.
