Digital camera reviews of Apple Universal Dock for iPod (White)(OLD VERSION)Digital camera Review: Not compatible with 3rd Generation iPod! Summary: 2 Stars
There are a lot of negative reviews, but it did seem as if the product would control basic playback, so I thought I'd try it. Bad choice!
I have an old 3rd generation iPod, and all I wanted was a base with a remote, recharge, and audio connect to my stereo - I want to dedicate my old iPod to the stereo now. The Apple specs claim that this product is compatible with 3rd generation, and you can even order a base plate of the right size. This base simply is NOT compatible. Why? The 3rd generation iPods only recharge from a Firewire charger, and the Universal Dock does not pass that voltage through - thus you can't recharge your iPod while in the dock. I would not call this compatibility. I found similar issues with 4th generation, too - not all USB chargers would work, although some would pass through the charge voltage. If there is some reason to not pass the Firewire 12 volt signal - then there should be a switch on the bottom that would allow that signal to be passed from the input to the dock connector. Then this might be a universal dock. Now it is only for new iPods.
I never tried the remote - what's the point. The old battery wouldn't provide much play time, so why bother.
So I think I'll try the iJet RF Remote Control for iPod with Dock Connector which supposedly passes through the signals from the dock - I still have my original dock (which doesn't have remote capabilities, but will connect to the stereo and Firewire charger.)

Despite being a good produt, it ends up inside the gadget drawer. I had no use for it after the first 2 weeks of usage.
Digital camera Review: Oh, come on now, Apple! Summary: 1 Stars
For those of you who know me, I'm a BIG TIME Apple fanboi. I have 3 Macs (my wife has two), 2 iPods (my wife has one), and I'm running Mac OS X Leopard on all my computers using the family pack. I love Apple.
Until this product.
Does it do what it says? Technically, yes. It allows you to "dock" your iPod and control music from the remote and play video using the appropriate video cable (I have an iPod Classic 80GB which requires a different video cable from previous iPods).
What it does not do is allow you to control your iPod as you would expect. For example, the remote control is the standard Apple remote that comes with modern (read: Intel-based) Macs. It features a "menu" button. This button is completely NON-FUNCTIONAL with the Apple Universal Dock. It does not work like the menu button on the iPod. (This is stated in the manual.)
If you have your iPod attached to the TV and you move the selection using the wheel to one of your TV shows and press Play (the center button) on the remote, MUSIC starts playing. Huh?! This is completely different than the functionality on the front panel of the iPod.
If you start playing a video using the iPod's controls, pressing the next button >>| on the remote does NOT skip to the next video. Again, pressing Menu does nothing. Pressing the previous button |<< does return the video to the beginning and holding the next and previous buttons does fast-forward the video, but if you cannot skip to the next video, what's the purpose?
If you intend to use this dock for video purposes as I was, save your money. Get the appropriate video cable and be done with it. The Apple Universal Dock adds nothing for you.
If you are going to use the Apple Universal Dock to control music, then it should work for you, except that the Menu button doesn't perform any functions, so you can't switch playlists.
It's obvious to me why Apple disabled comments and voting on this product on their website.
Digital camera Review: Old model Summary: 3 Stars
Description does nit say that this is the old model (white remote vs aluminum). Still works but slightly annoying. Also audio is not shielded from cell phone interference
Digital camera Review: Only Half of what Apple claims Summary: 2 Stars
This item does not control photographs as stated. Only music. Disappointing. Menu does not appear on TV screen.
