After reading all of the reviews, I knew what I was getting in this dock. And I STILL wanted it. I previously had a USB cable dangling around my desk somewhere to sync my IPod (first generation). When I would sync it, it would just lay on my desk loose. When you have a curious cat, this is not a good thing. I wanted the dock so I didn't have to go searching for the dangly USB cord. I could just pop it on the dock like I do my digital camera. I knew it didn't come with any cords. But why did I need one? I just plugged the cord that was previously dangling into the back. Perfect... no more dangly USB cable. As far as the dock not fitting the nano you have, they do clearly specify first or second generation. I bought my Nano last year. It's not aluminum. The new ones are. Therefore, I assumed my Nano was a first generation. Had I purchased a newer Nano, I would have gone with the second generation dock. It doesn't seem too rocket sciency for me. It's so awesome and so EXACTLY what I wanted, my husband now wants one for his desk (his USB cable is tucked very obviously into a drawer on his desk). We are both VERY happy with the dock.
