Digital camera reviews of Apple iPod shuffle 4 GB Black (3rd Generation) OLD MODELDigital camera Review: It works.... I guess Summary: 3 Stars
The iPod itself is fine... the controls are not. Apple earbuds, to be blunt, are crap. They are uncomfortable, do not give any insulation, and have weak bass. I have earbuds from a third party manufacturer, and after purchasing this as a replacement to my old iPod Shuffle 2nd Generation, found that I cannot use my old earbuds with it. Eventually, I suppose other manufacturers will make models that work on this, but I still have to buy that too. Apple made the same mistake on the 4th Generation shuffle too, which perplexes me. Better to add a half inch to the width, and make it work, than to make it slim and obnoxious.
Right now, go buy a 2nd or 3d Generation Nano, at the same price, it's better than this with the same amount of storage space. If you want more battery life / button controls, than get the Shuffle 2nd generation, only 1 GB, but it works. I hate this thing.
Digital camera Review: Long term rip-off Summary: 2 Stars
Just like with most things coming out of Cupertino these days this next nipple on their cash cow needs a bit of pre-purchase scrutiny by potential buyers.
By virtue of the ultra minimalist design the device itself lacks any physical controls, which are instead integrated into the earbuds wire. Fine and dandy- give their designers an award. But also give their marketers an even greater award! What part of your portable media device is most likely to malfunction, get lost, "borrowed", sat on, chewed by Fido, etc, and frequently needs replacement? Bingo! Yes, the headphones.
A proprietary chip allows communication (play/pause/next/etc) between the iP shuffle 3G and the headphone. It's not really DRM as another reviewer mentioned, but any third party company needs to pay Apple for license to access that proprietary technology allowing their product to talk with the Shuffle. And the cost will be passed on to the consumer.
What this means is that the next time you lose the included earphones or the connections get lose you can't just grab whatever plugs you have around the house. You either buy an Apple replacement ($30-$80), or an alternative vendor, whose jacked-up (no pun intended) price will reflect the "Made for iPod" seal of approval extra fee.
Proprietary technology and licensing thereof is nothing new- the well deserved fruits of innovation and technological progress, but to build it into earphones is really pushing it.
Digital camera Review: Love it and hate it! Summary: 2 Stars
I have had my shuffle for over a year now and wish I never bought it. I am a running and love how portable the shuffle is. I enjoy moving to different playlists while running. The problem is the headphone controls. Once they get a drop of sweat near it, it will shut down. This happened almost ever run with the Apple headphones. I thought it was made small and portable to run and workout with, but I guess not. I thought the adaptors out there would be the solution. Plus using the adapters I could use any headphones I wanted. Same problem. If there is sweat it shut down. Plus, the adapters break very easily. I have been threw three in less than six months. Be aware prior to buying this item. If you plan to run with it, know it will not be reliable... that is unless you do not sweat at all. If you use the adaptor, know you will be buying a new one every few months.
Digital camera Review: Love my new iPod! Summary: 5 Stars
The iPod is a great size for clipping on to my gym clothes. It is very easy to use. Apple's website walked me thru the steps and I was using the player immediately.
Digital camera Review: Mas o menos... Summary: 3 Stars
