Digital camera Review: Actually really good Summary: 5 Stars
Let's set aside all the hype. I've used my iPhone for over six months (it was purchased for me at work when it first came out), and I can confidently say that for my purposes, this is the best smartphone I've used. I've previously used four different Palm and Windows smartphones, including two Treos. I'm not an Apple groupie and I don't even like OS X. But this is the smartphone for me, simply because it is very good at the things I care about most.
Most of what I do is on the web. My home computer is primarily a web terminal; most of my tasks are in web applications such as Google apps, and reading online. The iPhone was designed for my kind of use -- a very limited number of "desktop" applications, with most activity happening in the web browser.
Pros
- Excellent mobile web browser. Safari on an OS X desktop sucks; Safari on the iPhone is the best smartphone browser I've seen. The touch interface works well. Support for Ajax is quite good and nearly every web site is at least functional.
- Beautiful display, relatively uncluttered with user interface crap, so I can focus on content. I can easily read full NYT articles by scrolling on this screen.
- The POP/IMAP email client is also quite good.
- The touch screen is (mostly) a pleasure to learn and use.
- The software updates bring welcome improvements, for example custom web shortcuts on the desktop (a Palm Treo invention). It's sort of like using Google web apps; every few months, they give you something new to play with.
- Minimalist form factor: not too big, not too thick, not too many buttons. I thought lack of keyboard would be a problem; I've forgotten about it since then.
- It's an iPod too -- one less device. Yay.
Cons
- Internet access is TOO DARN SLOW. This is obviously AT&T's fault, not Apple's, otherwise this review would lose a star right here. I think Verizon would have been a better choice, but what do I know.
- A few little user interface gripes. Like, why is it so many taps to go between inboxes for different email accounts? These will get cleaned up.
- The update process in iTunes doesn't automatically back up the iPhone before installing a software update. One time the update process locked up and I had to reset the phone, and my last backup was a few days prior. But the backup restored fine.
- Relatively low level of integration with desktop apps. But, that's not the point of this device.
- No third-party iPhone apps yet (though it just became possible to develop them). But, that's not the point of this device. Everything I need is on the web (if I can just get it to download fast enough).
- Headphone jack only fits the included headphones. This is a typical mind-bogglingly arrogant Apple move (told you I wasn't an Apple groupie).
I've never seen a brand new, innovative device that was this useful right out of the box. That's why I'm giving it five stars despite some imperfections.
Digital camera Review: Almost Perfect Summary: 4 Stars
I live in a rural area and Verizon is the only game in town, if you want to place calls at your residence. So I knew I wouldn't buy an iPhone until a 3G version debuted.
I did, however, want the capability of checking my email and website while out. I knew from experience with a notebook computer that there were lots of wireless connections that were free to use. So for that reason, the Touch was just what I wanted.
I really like typing on this - what a difference when compared to texting on a cellphone. The feedback when you're using the qwerty keyboard is super. What a well-thought-out interface. It works well enough so that I find myself typing full email replies instead of cryptic text-message relies.
I always have a movie or two, and some unwatched TV shows stored on it. I watch when I'm waiting in doctor's offices or when I'm having my car worked on. The screen is gorgeous.
Ironically, I prefer my iPod nano for listening to podcasts. The iPod Touch has a drill-down for podcasts and playlists that I just don't feel comfortable with. And to be perfectly frank, my all-time favorite podcast listening device is my original shuffle - but my husband takes the shuffle with him now. The Touch's menu system for podcasts is why I rated it only 4 -stars.
I use the notepad function a lot, as well as the calender function. I store all my grocery lists in notes, along with my to-do lists.
When Apple removed the phone, why didn't they leave the camera? That's one thing I could not understand. There are simply times when I need to take a quick picture of something, and if I'm carrying the Touch, why not use this? Instead, I have to pull out my phone or my Sony camera. When I'm taking a quick photo, I don't need super high resolution - it's usually a reference image, not something to archive. The 2-megapixel camera in the iPhone would have been perfectly fine. I hope they include this function in the next generation.
I'd buy it again, and happily connect to my gmail account now. If they include a camera in the next version, I might buy that too.
Digital camera Review: Almost as good as an iPhone... Summary: 4 Stars
The Apple iPod Touch is a fantastic product, utilizing the new touch screen features that seem to wow the iPhone crowd. I received the new iPod Touch as a gift this August, and I have been using it everyday since. I use it to play my iTunes music, write my to-do list, sync my Outlook calendar and contacts, send and check e-mail, and browse the internet. However, I cannot make nor receive phone calls. That is the one function my iPod is missing, and I regret having to reach into my bag, pull out my cell phone, and put my iPod away.
I find my new gadget very easy to use and very reliable, but I find myself wishing for an iPhone instead. I would rather not have two gadgets when they could very easily be rolled into one. Also, I have found that I must pay $9.99 to download the new Apps Store from iTunes, while my iPhone-using friends can download it for free. So, to download the free applications that iTunes has to offer for my iPod, I must pay an initial set-up fee. This has deterred me from making the purchase. I am not that desperate to play games that I am willing to pay $10 for them. Another thing that deters me is the wireless internet situation. As a college student, I can secure wireless internet on my campus and in my house, but I cannot get it while walking down the street or while riding in the car. Since I am not using an AT&T service, I cannot utilize the Edge network, and that makes connectivity slightly frustrating. Connecting is also not automatic, so I must manually connect to a wireless network of choice before I can surf the Web or check my e-mail.
So, now that the holidays are fast approaching, I find myself hoping for an iPhone. I would gladly put my iPod Touch away to gain more convenience and connectivity.
Digital camera Review: Amazing Summary: 5 Stars
This is more than I ever thought it could be. It even picks up the wireless network at my job. Whenever I don't feel like opening and turning on my laptop, just to check my email, I just check it on my iPod. This iPod is perfect for so many things. 5 of 5 for this amazing product. I am just waiting for the XBOX360 update so that it will initialize and I can listen to my iPod on it. This product is slim, smooth, sexy, and powerful. So rarely you find a product with beauty and performance. It's the Lamborghini of portable music players.
