Digital camera reviews of Archos 5 250 GB Internet TabletDigital camera Review: Amazing product for a great price! Summary: 5 Stars
Like any smart shopper, I did my research once I decided I needed to upgrade and replace my iPod touch. I didn't want to fork out the hundreds on a 64gb iPod and figured by now there had to be other options. As I searched, I found dozens of players and devices that each had their key focus of ability. Finally, after a lot of debating and reading hundreds of reviews, I decided the Archos 5 IMT 250gb was it. It can store more music and videos than any other device I've seen, the display is absolutely beautiful and a joy to view compared to my old iTouch.
That's not to say I didn't have issues though... The first one I received had a few dead pixels, and it was a bit of a disappointment to see, but Amazon was amazingly fast in shipping a new one to me that overall seems to be much better (the old hard drive vibrated a little too).
I made review videos on Youtube because I felt the Archos 5 has been battered too much by some of the negative comments and promoted too much by salesman... it was time for a fair review.
I will be honest, this is not the device for someone who has 4,000 songs or less, doesn't watch portable movies, has tight pockets, or is image concerned.. If you want portability and style with limits on space and size, get an iPod, Zune, or one of the vast varieties of other players out there. This device seriously demolishes the iPod touch, but it's not much of a comparison because they are two different devices. This is a portable DVR, the iPod is a music player. Lets not quibble about it anymore, it's plain and simple.

I will suggest getting a good screen protector and a Tuff-luv case. Some cheaper cases don't have a flap to keep a stylus from rubbing the top of the device... minor issue though.
Oh, and regarding the Archos customer service... I called Archos, ended up having a 45min wait, however it was Monday, the first day after the Christmas holiday weekend... so it was understandable as half the world was calling them and even local lines were flooded. I just played solitaire while I waited and they were kind, quick and precise.
I *highly* reccomend this to anyone looking for a portable media device (video, audio, photo).
Digital camera Review: Amazon Unbox Undone. Summary: 3 Stars
First issue, if you wanted to watch videos, you are required to buy two downloads for $19.99. I sensed a nickel and dime scheme about to happen. I was extremely disappointed with the content providers. CinemaNow charges twice the price for movies. I had several TV series on my Amazon Video Library and a couple of movies. I installed Amazon Unbox. After figuring out that you needed to change the USB connection to Microsoft Media Player, I was able to transfer movies and TV series. Several months later, I went to move more programs, but the Archos 5 wasn't recognized. I downloaded a new copy of Amazon Unbox, I tried just about anything to get it to work. The Amazon "supported devices" was a complete joke. The page listed two first generation Archos devices and Nokia Phones!?!?! There's a like that brings you over to Microsoft's defunct "Play With" program. I considered dumping my Archos for a newer version, but I haven't found a replacement I like,
Digital camera Review: Amazon sent me an used Archos 5!! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought an Archos 5 as a gift to myself for Xmas and finally got it today. Start of the ordeal. 1) There were missing items from the box: earphones and DVR Adapter; 2) When I plugged it in, it turned out to be half full with music and movies dating back to November 2009; 3) When I tried to register the product, the Archos website tells me that the product key for my Archos has already been registered!!
CONCLUSION: I believe I have been sent an used item. This shipped directly from Amazon!
Does anyone have a similar problem?? I am open to suggestions.
UPDATE 07-JAN-10: Contacted Amazon and they could not offer a replacement but will accept the return to refund my account. I want to emphasize, my problem is not with Archos, which I think is a brilliant product, but with the circumstances that I got it. At least the person who registered it before me had the heart and intelligence to buy all the plug-ins.
Digital camera Review: An amazing device that gives a huge punch. Summary: 5 Stars
ITS AWESOME!!!
had the archos 504 for two years and finally crapped out, so upgraded to the archos 5 and it rocks. the software, touch screen style of design are huge improvements. ease of access amazing. i love the web radio. the video player is HD quality. the battery life is great too. made it to omaha on an 8 hour drive and still had bout half a battery so i do buy into that fact the battery could last a good 16 hours. its a bit bulky but i do say it delivers a big punch so bulk maybe a downfall but archos has done it again with an awesome device. if you fiddle with the touch screen and go from program to program it tends to drain the battery much faster. ARCHOS 5, i give it 10 out 10. duelly impressed with the new unit. Archos beats the ipod out of the water.
Digital camera Review: Another Archos Dead After A Month Summary: 1 Stars
Once again I fell for the bells, whistles, and advertising known as archos. My history started with the Archos 20mb recorder several years ago. It went and went until it didnt have no more to give. I then stepped up to the 605 which died after about 3 months. After a month of non returned phone calls & un returned emails I was able to get it RMA's. A 3 month long RMA and I got a refurb (not the same one) finally in return, which died as well. Both units worked well for thier brief stint then went totally dead. They were kept in a home enviroment or a vehicle in motion (never left to bake with the windows up). Well the 605 went to ebay as I didnt have time to deal with it.
Still resisting falling into the realm of the ip*d, and the love of my old archos I shucked out the big dollars for the archos 5. For the first month and a half this thing was wonderful, I thought this will be the thing to de-throne apple. Much like the ones I previously owned one day it up and DIED. Back to the non-existant Archos tech support. Two weeks of unreturned emails. After I was finally able to get a guy on the line to listen and not transfer or hang up, I was treated so rudely and horribly I wanted to hang up. It it wasnt for the high end price tag I would've. I was drilled like a criminal with every possible attempt to make it sound to be neglect on my behalf. I dont think it would be possible to treat some one so rude face to face. I get my RMA and send it out. Two weeks after I call for a update (4 days to get ahold of a person this time), I am told that my 5 wasnt received. After spitting out a mail confirmation number I get put on hold for 45 minutes. At least I got some pc gaming in. Well low and behold it was received and I would get a phone call within two weeks of the phone call. 3 weeks later I'm on the phone again with them chasing my tail. A month and a half after I finally get yet another refurb on the mail. I can guarentee it was a refurb as it had family pictures and XXX videos on it. Very nice and professional. It screams quality control
All in all this will be the last Archos I ever purchase. I am 0 for 4. I say 0 for 4 based on the last one having someone elses stuff and adult material. This one is going to ebay before it dies again. I also give this a one star based on the non-existant, rude, and unprofessional customer service. Looking at other reviews and around the net I see there are many DOA's and dead units out there. Maybe that is the cause, they are just worked too hard. Avoid this one, and avoid the archos name in general.
