I am one of those who can hang on to one product just for the love of it. I've got an I-mate Jasjar which has being serving me like a second brain and did not want to let it go for anything. The trouble I had was storage. Persuaded by a friend about this Archos 5 devices I got one of Amazon and it came just as promised, was still really not convienced of the product as compared to my Jasjar.But just as I open the box and started exploring the Archos 5 Internet Tablet,I found it an amazing product and wished I had it 10 years ago for half of my brain would have being in it as back up.The 250GB space relieved me alot. besides, the fast and enduring connectivity to the internet make me enjoy my BBC programs, country music ,VOC programs etc. It is really lovely. I found out the hard way about the negative reviews of the Archos 5. Used it for less than 5 days then it locked up where it would not boot up. The Archos logo screen could be seen but that is as far as it would go. I tried reseting it numerous times without any positive results. Called Archos spoke to someone who walked me thru another procedure of trying to repair the software or drive. There also was a procedure of reformatting the drive. Neither one worked. The technician then firmly said "send it back to Amazon". This is without a doubt the worse computer device I've ever owned.
Then there is the fact that you've got to buy different software and accessaries to be able to use all the features advertised. On top, accessaries like the DVR Station and TV Snap-ons can not be purchased anywhere, (none in stock) not even at Archos. One of the largest reasons I purchased the Archos 5. Sad!!!!!!!!!

When I received my archos 5 internet media tablet I was excited. I wanted to download music and videos, use apps and such. When you turn it on you have to register it, this only takes a few minutes and it's quite simple.
After that I did what most people do, I played music and opened up video to see how the sound and video worked. The sound and video was great, IMO. I played it for a total of 4 hours of mp3's and maybe 4 hours on the web and other stuff. After that the battery went to red, so I guess the battery averages 8 hours( web does suck up more juice than song play does, keep that in mind).
Then I tried to find apps that may have been already installed, I'm a noob when it comes to the app thing, they don't come preinstalled. I went online to see if I could install apps-lib and transfer it, but no such luck. From what I understand, from what I've read, this version of archos doesn't get apps lib which I don't like. Apps lib seems to have some stuff I may want or need. Someone on a forum said that I'm not missing out on anything tho.
One thing I was very impressed with was, unlike the i pod touch or i phone, you can play music and surf the web at the same time. You get full use of the web, if you have a connection to wifi of course. I did have trouble getting my computer to sync with my archos. I have windows vista with windows media player 11 and my husband has windows 7 with windows media player 12 and it worked on his. That was another thing I didn't particularly like.
My conclusion about this product is that it has great sound, with built in speakers and with headphones, and video. The web access is great, the newer version with the android operating system seems to be better IMO. The battery life is great. The UI is great and very user friendly. It doesn't get apps lib, which sucks. It wasn't compatible with my computer, for some reason. Overall I'd have to say it's a great product and I would recommend it for someone else.

This product is terrible, the company is terrible.
It is a media player, but as delivered:
1) It cannot play iPod or most other common format videos
2) It cannot play video files > 2GB
3) The sound quality is terrible
4) The video quality is only ok, no where as good as an iPod
5) When plugged into the usb charging cable, it draws more power than it is charging, so eventually the battery runs dead. You must turn it off and charge for > 8 hours to charge the battery.
When you pay a lot extra to purchase the players to play the common format files, you find that one player will play iPod format files, but not > 2GB, the player that will play large files will not play iPod format files (you had to purchase 2 extra players).
Worse than this, stopping or changing you position in a video stream often causes the player and/or the whole device to crash. Accidentally touching (the touch screen!) during a movie playback will cause a crash.
The company digitally signs all programs which run on the system, so it is totally closed, more than Apple products, no one can write new apps or fix broken apps on this system except for Archos, and they don't fix anything.
Their customer support is rude, arrogant and incompetent.
I will never buy any product from Archos again, ever.

The Archos Handheld connected seamlessly to my home wi-fi network. I am able to download email and surf the web on the go. With it's huge built in storage, I have barely touched it's capacity even though I have downloaded pictures, videos, and music. I would highly recommend this handheld for anyone who needs a small, lightweight computer.
