Digital camera reviews of Archos 5 250 GB Internet Tablet

Digital camera Review: Aweful!
Summary: 1 Stars

Slow to the start up. Sometimes does not respond to touch. You have to pay 20 dollars to watch mp4 files. Also another 20 dollars if you want to watch Mpeg files. Also I get their advertising on my device. Has nice storage but everything else is terrible.

Digital camera Review: BEWARE! This is not the Archos 5 Internet Media Tablet with Android
Summary: 1 Stars

Despite the description of this item as being the Archos 5 Internet Media Tablet, it is not. It is an Archos 5. Check Archos's website and you will see the difference. The true IMT is a new product that uses Android technology, while the Archos 5 is an older, clunkier version of the Archos 5 IMT. So, caveat emptor as they say. For what you get, I suppose this is a good price, but if you want true connectivity and Android capability, spend the extra 100 bucks for the 160 GB IMT. Be advised that both the A5 and A5 IMT are MUCH heavier than an iPhone or Android phone (due to the extra storage capacity provided by the internal hard drive, that's the trade off -- and, of course, the A5 is not a phone). This is a good portable player for music, pictures and video (sort of a DVD Player, MP3 player, and Electronic Photo Frame in one package, except, of course, that you have to rip the movies to a file -- or buy them through Archos' partner service -- that can play on the A5). Useful for a traveller who does not want to lug a laptop or netbook around and has simple email requirements -- but only if you get the optional charging station (see comment below about the included accessories). Be advised that is you use a Lotus-based email system (common for work email) you probably will have limited ability to receive and send emails (I can get text emails, but not html and cannot send at all). Be prepared to pay for add-ons if you want full funtionality. Accessories included with the basic device are a USB charger (very slow and no use if you are not near a computer -- with the A5 is supposed to replace!) and an adapter that is only used for the optional docking stations -- so useless unless you buy one of these as well. The DVR docking station (doubles as a charger) is probably an OK add on if you don't want to pay for TiVo or a similar service and don't have a lot of shows to record (or have lots of excess storage capacity on your home PC and can transfer the files there).

Update: Since writing this review my Archos 5 has had repeated disk drive problems (a frequent complaint with other Archos models). Also, the antiquated operating system for the browser frequently will get hung-up and the system will either shut down on its on or it must be done manually. About a month ago the touch screen failed. Although I was able to restore functionality by jimmying the connection, the response remains erratic. In short, Archos has some good ideas about small ionternet appliances, but quality control is horrible. Despite the cost savings, the lack of reliability is too much of a draw back.

Digital camera Review: BUYER BEWARE
Summary: 1 Stars

Beware! Despite the high cost of Archos PMPs, there is virtually no technical and after-sales support in the United States. Calls to the Archos US service center, which they claim is always open, go unanswered for hours and hours. This callous behavior and contempt for customers is begging for a class action lawsuit from Archos US customers. How can they honor their warranty if they cannot be contacted? Getting an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) number from their US offices located in Colorado is a nightmare. I got one email from them to provide additional information; I did and they never responded. Their RMA site is wonky and would not give accurate information.

Their players are good, but pray that you don't have an after sale issue - then you are on your own.

Digital camera Review: Bad

I returned it on the 4th day after i got it, because it couldn`t have switched on even after a reset. then i bought another product - Nokia n810, which is alright for now.

Digital camera Review: Bad product...Buy an iPod
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this in August of 2009. Once my iPod Nano died after over 3 years of abuse (it actually went through the washer AND drier with no issues!) I was really drawn to the 250GB hard drive of the Archos because it would hold all of my music with storage space to spare. Also, it doesn't have the file transfer red-tape of the iPod. Well, after only 2 months of very light usage it crashed. I tried everything the customer service rep suggested and nothing worked. So now I'm stuck sending it in for repair.

I understand sometimes a lemon makes it out of QC, but read the reviews and forums all over the internet. You will find that all arrows point to Archos being an incompetent tech company.

I would rather get my money back to purchase another iPod, but Amazon won't take it back. I guess I'm stuck with this PoS Archos for now.
