Digital camera reviews of Archos 6 GB Jukebox 6000 MP3 Player/Hard Drive

Digital camera Review: Archos Jukebox is the best out there...
Summary: 5 Stars

Overall, the Jukebox is a great product, I love that it also serves as a hard drive, allowing me to give my mp3 collection to all my friends PC or Mac. Yet there are a few minor but irritable glitches on the Mac side at least. When I play the unit it creates a RESOURCE.FRK folder as the first item inside each of my folders. In addition, you can't run any other program at the same time as the Jukebox is connected to your computer. Sound became very good with 4.53g upgrade. I had a question, as reviews were mixed on the topic: can I not create a play list over 30 songs or one over 300?

Pros+ small/compact size rechargeable batteries (up to 8 hours playback) USB connection short start-up time 5-12 secs vs. up to 2 mins for Nomad Jukebox

Cons- unusual controls while playing Jukebox (very minor con) -adds weird named files wihle playing it (on Mac side)

I have no problem at all with the sound and overall this the best mp3 player and value out there; unless you particularly enjoy listening to the same 10-40 mp3's over and over and over and over and over again!

Digital camera Review: Archos Technical Support
Summary: 1 Stars

My review is not directed solely at this product, but at the Archos technical support. That support is virtually non-existent. I have tried numerous times over the last month via both email and phone to reach their support team, but have had no success. I have sent 4 separate emails, and called twice. I have received no reply to my email (not even the friendly "auto-reply" that at least reminds you that their email server works), and spent a few of my own long distance dollars on interminable hold since they do not have a toll free number. I even called the main number in Irvine and got the sympathetic receptionist to try to connect me to the tech support staff. Despite her willingness to help, she wasn't able to pull that off. After a little coaxing, she did give me the direct email addresses of two of what she thought were the more responsive members of the technical support staff. That didn't help either. Still no reply. All this is necessary since (depending on which Archos product you buy) you may or may not have any technical support info available to you on their website. In my case, there was none.

If you feel that an Archos product is a "must have", keep the receipt. Your only recourse may be to return it if you have ANY problem with it after purchase. I doubt that you will get anywhere with their technical support program. Good luck.

Digital camera Review: Archos or Nomad?
Summary: 5 Stars

I tried both the Archos 6000 and the Nomad Jukebox (6gig) and I must tell you; the Archos 6000 wins in the end. Let's compare the two if we shall:

1. FILE ORGANIZATION. The Nomad Jukebox does have a better file organization system but at a cost. It takes almost a minute to start up and is very slow when playlists are added. The Archos Jukebox has a simple file organizational method which does not slow the player down when you're doing other things (ie changing settings)and does not hamper the start-up time

2. PORTABILITY. The Archos Jukebox 6000 is MUCH more portable then the Nomad Jukebox. The Nomad Jukebox is very heavy and bulky and hard to even carry around in your pockets. The Archos Jukebox fits in the palm of your hand and isn't cumbersome.

3. CUSTOMER SUPPORT. For the Archos Jukebox, customer support, is pretty bad. I had to send a previous archos jukebox back because the interface was going haywire (probably because I was jogging with it, which is a bad idea!). The customer support gave me an RMA number and I sent it in, but getting the RMA number in the first place was a task. BUT they did send me a BRAND NEW player out in under two weeks.

4. DISPLAY. The Archos Jukebox has a smaller display size. But I must tell you, it's a LOT more attractive then the Nomad's orange LCD light which annoyed me greatly. The con for the Archos is that it has a plastic display case, which didn't bother me at all.

5. BATTERY LIFE. The Nomad Jukebox has TERRIBLE battery life. The maximum life I got from their (high capacity) batteries was 3 hours. Also, I'm convinced that the battery recharger didn't even work. The Archos Jukebox has 8 hour battery life and charges every time I plug it in. This was the biggest determinant for me in the end because, let's face it, 3 hours is junk! When I'm walking around campus or taking long trips; I don't want to have to bring 10000 batteries.

6. SOFTWARE. The Nomad Jukebox uses its own software for uploading songs, although it has many features that come with the software; it's ultimetly pointless. The Archos Jukebox shows up as a Drive letter which makes it a breeze to upload songs (or anything you want!).

7. SOUND QUALITY. The Nomad Jukebox has much better sound quality then the Archos Jukebox. The Archos Jukebox lacks the Bass (which could be better with better headphones) and the equalizer abilities that the Nomad Jukebox has an overabundence of (environmental settings, come on, talk about pointless bells and whistles!), and YES, the headphones that come with the Archos are JUNK! If you're like me, and you have a couple pairs lying around, just throw the ones that came with it out!

CONCLUSION... The Archos Jukebox 6000 does away with many (IMO) pointless features that the Nomad Jukebox has; it is by far the better MP3 player of the two. (just don't take it running!)

Digital camera Review: Avoid like the plague
Summary: 1 Stars

I researched buying the product and was genuinely excited about buying it. When I got it, it looked great and hooked up easy enough to my computer. After i had loaded it up the problems started. The machine crashes day after day and now i use it as a door stopper. Dont try emailing for support, they won't reply.

D'ont touch the product.....if you are unluckly like me, you will have wsted your money, and archos dont care.

Digital camera Review: BEWARE!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

The thing looks nice. But after the initial 6 hour charge and I started to use it it proved that looks can be decieving. I got many PC freeze-ups and bluescreen errors trying to deal with the USB uplading but it eventually worked and I threw in about 250 tracks. But after only one day of only a few hours of listening The unit stopped working and displayed an error message upon startup. I couldn't even access the drive through the USB because it had somehow messed itself up so badly. The thing to keep in mind is that unlike other MP3 players, this unit is a Hard drive so it can have all the same glitches and quirks that a computer can have with a much more confusing interface then a computer. Wish me luck on my return process...
