Digital camera reviews of Archos 6 GB Jukebox 6000 MP3 Player/Hard DriveDigital camera Review: Better than Nomad Jukebox. Summary: 5 Stars
Unlike Creative Labs, Archos did not bow down to the recording industry, and did NOT make the Archos SDMI compliant. This is a good thing. It means you can upload all your mp3s to the Archos 6 GB Jukebox 6000 and (unlike the Nomad Jukebox), you can DOWNLOAD THEM BACK TO A COMPUTER. Archos is a company well-known for its hard-drives, and they have (finally) introduced a multi-gig mp3player with great features. This is a product worth the money, and was bought (with change leftover) with credit from returning the Nomad.
Digital camera Review: Big Gamble Summary: 1 Stars
If this product works, it is a great buy. However, from my experience (my girlfriend and I have gone through 3 between us), they last AT MOST several months before breaking, and when they do malfunction, Technical Support is nowhere to be found. Mine broke 1 month ago, and I have yet to receive a reply to an email to tech support. Furthermore, the tech support phone line has a 949 area code (California) and has a perpetual busy signal. I imagine they keep the phone off the hook to avoid answering to the numerous problems with their product. Once I can afford a replacement, I will not be buying from Archos. If you're lucky, you'll wind up with a nice MP3 player for a low price; otherwise, you will lose a few hundred dollars.
Digital camera Review: Brilliant when it works... Summary: 3 Stars
I have had mine for a few weeks, and will be returning it, as I don't have enough time to keep formatting and re-loading it. When I first got it, I loaded about 6 CDs into it, sat down, listened to 2 songs, and the hard drive crashed. I ran FDISK in a DOS window, then re-formatted the drive (also within Windows). It then worked for a week or so, before the folder names became gibberish on the display, and the drive quit being recognized by Windows. I formatted it again, ran Scandisk in thorough mode (which found no errors), then spent hours re-loading all my music. This morning I fired it up, selected a playlist, it started loading the songs, then displayed "Auto Power Off" and died. Pros: Great sound, large capacity, easy to use, good battery life, small size. Cons: Unreliable, audio out is way too low for aux inputs (you really have to crank the car stereo with a cassette adapter too), lousy documentation. I think I'll wait about a year until several companies have second or third generation units available.
Digital camera Review: Buy the Creative Nomad, dump the Archos Jukebox Summary: 1 Stars
My Archos Jukebox did not last more than a couple of weeks before I received the "hard disk error" that several other people mentioned. Mine would also power down by itself for no apparent reason. Also, I assumed that the sound quality was poor because of the MP3 compression. However, I exchanged the Archos Jukebox for the Creative Nomad and found that my MP3 files sounded great on the Nomad compared with the Archos. The Nomad just seems more solid and professionally built than the Archos. The Archos seems pretty cheap and flimsy. Tech support did not seem to be very good, although they admitted that there was an obvious problem with many of their units. The only thing that Archos has going for them is that you can use the Jukebox as a hard drive and you can just drag and drop your MP3 files on to it without using a software program.
Digital camera Review: Buy the player and get new headphones! Summary: 5 Stars
This player is awsome. It's so easy to use and so small! The only complaint is the lack of gain in the sound. The provided headphones suck for this player. You must go out and buy headphones that have a high sensitivity rating of 104 or better. I bought the Sony Sports model MDR-A30 that have a sensitivity rating of 108 and the player absolutely rocks. The line out function is also awsome and allows you to hook the player up to a device that does have gain. I'm an audiophile and MP3's by nature just aren't very good quality. However, you can get better quality out of the player just by ripping better CD's. It will never be audiophile quality but for what it is, it does it better than any other device out there.
