Digital camera reviews of Archos 605 Wi-Fi Portable Media Player (160 GB)Digital camera Review: ARCHOS TECH SUPPORT (F)- NO STARS Summary: 1 Stars
2 days and wont turn on. I was thinking of having it replaced until I spoke with the unhelpful and rude archos tech support manager!! specifically(Katy A #7920). Its amazing how people with no people skills attain these positions in customer service.
Amazon is giving me a refund. So no problem. However.
Dont buy the plugins unless you understand the NO REFUND TOO BAD POLICY!! Katy just laughs at you. She wont transfer you to her BOSS!!?
I think the company will be suprised when the chargeback clears. I know that Fry's stop selling these because of the horrible customer support. Lets hope Amazon does. ARCHOS GO UNDER
Digital camera Review: ARCHOS WARRANTY PROGRAM Summary: 2 Stars
This is my first review of a consumer product and unfortunately it has to be bad. If all worked well, a satisfied customer tends to be a quiet one. Note before you read further that I owned a 604WiFi, which is the prior generation of this model in 30GB format. The issues with the units themselves are particular to the unit, but warranty is the same and that is what this review is about, since this is an investment.
I owned a 604WiFi 30 GB unit since February 2007 with DVR station...bought on Amazon for $300 plus $100 for the DVR station. Out of the box the thing worked great. Moving music and photos to the unit was simple, the graphics were amazing, and the DVR worked well enough, though it is far from intuitive. From a day to day perspective the unit worked as intended and you feel you have a more superior product than anything similar Apple or Sony can make. Except for the slow browser, heavy weight of the unit itself, the extreme heat the hard drive generates, and the incredibly short battery life, I give it 4 stars for effort and see potential. However, customer service and support are less than 1 star if possible.
In May I plugged the unit into my PC to swap music out and the hard drive crashed (all files on unit erased except for the system file). The unit wouldn't even turn on. I called customer service in Colorado to get the response of "yup, it's your hard drive, that will cost you about $150, here's your RMA number." Well now, that is half the price of the unit for approximately 450 days of use. Thus, if I decide not to repair it, the unit will cost about a $1.00 a day to operate. If I do repair it, the unit will have cost me $550, including the DVR station, with no guarantee it won't crash in another year. I don't know about you, but a 30GB MP3 player for $550 is a little high. No thanks Archos, your product is garbage and so is your warranty program. If you can't back your product, why should I, and thus this review.
If you buy the product know that you are receiving a state of the art unit with everything you need in an all in one package, but should it "break," it is a very expensive investment. Perhaps consider buying used to hedge your bet. Hope this is helpful.
Digital camera Review: AWESOME! Summary: 5 Stars
This product is everything I could ask for and more! 160 GB is more than enough space and I found that I had no problems with any of the products features. Heres my lists of pros and cons (if any).
Pros:
tons of space
sharp screen with many viewable angles
kickstand allows you to sit the device down (very handy)
wi-fi works well and picks up all available networks
touchscreen is pretty accurate
fun product overall
Cons:
If you buy the basic package you have to charge the device through USB- which takes FOREVER (and is ridiculous)- buy the dock or mini-dock so you can charge with an adapter!
Digital camera Review: Absolute JUNK, and their Customer DIS-service is worst in industry Summary: 1 Stars
First, there is a major problem with the batteries on these things. It took over 12 hours to fully charge the first time, after that no amount of time charging was enough to fully charge the batteries.
Forget all the features they advertise, almost none of them are supported out of the box. You wanna play a movie? you need a $40 plugin, ya wanna go on the internet another plugin, ya wanna record anything? $100 more for the dock etc... etc...
Forget about their online store for movies, unless you are into PORN.
The interface is clunky and VERY slow, movies stopped and started, the volume was so week I had to buy amplified headphones to hear it if there was ANY kind of background noise, the hardrive failed two weeks after I started using it and their customer service department at first refused to honor the warrantee, was rude, inept, and would tell me one thing one day then something else the next day.
If you buy one of these, my conscience is clear - I WARNED YOU.
Digital camera Review: Absolutely terrible. Summary: 1 Stars
Having owned (and constantly struggled with) the Archos 605 WiFi for two years, I can honestly say it was not worth the money.
It has a massive laundry-list of problems that I frankly don't have the time or patience to list here fully. I'll just share the worst of them.
I spent lots of money buying the plug-ins that hardly ever worked as intended.
I had at least one hardware crash every day for the full two years. And Archos Tech support (when they bother to answer the phone) are belligerent, unintelligent, basically useless.
The hardware buttons on the side shorted out within a few months.
The operating system gave out within a year, making it impossible to connect the device to any computer.
Their idea of battery power is wildly exaggerated. It could barely last 2 hours when it was new and 2 years later, it dies after precisely 2 minutes! That's right, 2 minutes.
I bought the Archos because even now, you're not going to find any other large touchscreen MP3 player like this. It plays .avi, .mpg, .mov, wmv and a host of other video formats (and has a hard drive capacity that isn't a complete joke).
But ultimately, it falls down because of the worst build quality of any device I've ever seen.
Take my advice, and avoid it at all costs. And hope and pray with me that Apple will make the iPod support more video and audio formats.
