Digital camera Review: Beats an iPod Touch...Great Travel Buddy

Although all the attachements and accessories available for this 605 might amount to more than what you expect or want to pay for a PMP, this unit is great. It might be a bit bulkly in comparison to the iPod Touch, but with 160Gbs and all the media formats it can handle flawlessly, it's certainly worth the weight. For the most part, no need to convert your videos/music. Screen is gorgeous. Doubles as a portable storage device..something the iPod Touch doesn't do. A couple of minor complaints...the PDF viewer is slow to render pages. Perhaps a future firmware update might fix this. Also, viewing a few websites I've experienced crashes on the unit...where you'll have to hold down the ON button to restart the unit. This is a great media device, the video quality is excellent and the audio seems to be better than other devices I own. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is there is an issue with syncronization in that if I sync a playlist in a program like media player or media monkey, it does bring in the music files and playlists, but the playlist structure doesn't match where the files are. So when I do select the playlist it doesn't see any songs. There are workarounds for this but would be nice if Archos would address this in future firmware releases for those of us who have had playlists set up long ago and don't wish to re-invent the wheel. I have a 605 with a 160G drive. I've been using it for about two months. I purchased it primarily for the DVR and WiFi capabilities. The 605 is a marvel of technology if it worked as advertised. The first thing that annoyed me was that the WiFi connection is not reliable. If you think that this device will act like your laptop, think again. First, it needs a very strong WiFi signal and even then it sometimes disconnects for apparently no reason. Second, the 605 browsing (using the purchased plugin) is so slow that it becomes unbearable. Simple sites like Google are fine but you will find that there are many sites that you simply cannot view because they choke the 605. OK, the DVR station works but sometimes it records video in black & white instead of color. I can update the TV Guide using WiFi (again, horribly slow) but I cannot get the TV Guide to update using the ArchosLink software. I have contacted Archos technical support many times and they have never solved any of my issues. Next, the 605 crashes way to often, especially when browsing. I have bought my Archos 605 WiFi 160 Gb brand new from Amazone and it was best price I could find on the web. I works perfectly, I keep all my favorite movies to watch whenever I have time and mood for this. I use it to browse internet, too. I love this player for screen quality that is much bigger and better than my Ipod's.
