I purchased the Archos 605 Wi-Fi from Amazon's site last week. First of all, I selected this media player because of the ability to customize it with plug-ins and accessories, and because it is more flexible than the ipod touch with its capability to play/view more file formats.
That said, the day I received my Archos was the same day Archos decided to launch their new Internet Media Tablet, and this new product launch has prevented me from buying the plug-ins and accessories from the Archos online store which I need to use the product. The Archos online store has been down for six days. Customer service cannot help, because they need to use the same site to put through a purchase. This has all been very frustrating, since I need the plug-ins to use my product, specifically all the combined features that made me choose the Archos 605 Wi-Fi over the Ipod Touch:
-To browse the web
-To record from TV and DVD
-To Stream and watch videos from my computer
-To download movies and music using the ARCHOS Content Portal
-To download and play games
All in all, it's a great product, but customer service and the Archos website have failed.
Digital camera Review: DO NOT BUY Summary: 1 Stars
Ok, I have had this product for about 18 months. It was always a problem, and I was iffy on it. Well, now the product has exploded. In that something within the case has expanded and blown the case open. And, I have never kept it in a hot area (e.g., inside of a car -- never happened). I searched the internet, and this isn't the first time that this has happened. Archos provides lousy support and I'm just out of luck. I would never buy an archos product again.

If you buy a product from this company you are in for a real headache. Their products are glitchy when working, they break easily, and their customer service is HORRIBLE. I bought a unit from them that I had to send back twice within the first seven months of ownership. The second time they had me send the unit in, I was told "Oh yeah your warranty covers this". After multiple calls my unit was supposed to be fixed and sent back to me, after a few weeks I never received my product, so I call again to speak to a manager who tells me that the warranty does not cover my product, and I would have to pay an additional $250, to which I replied, "No Way". When I asked about the four people that told me I was covered under warranty the only reply I got was generic call center jargon and apologies. Do yourself a favor and stay far away from this company.

My first mistake was when I got this from Sharper Image when it was still in business, the device, promptly broke within a few days of purchasing, so I exchanged it for another one. That was my second mistake, I should've just gotten my money back. The battery stopped charging within a year so I got it repaired by Archos under warranty. They took forever to send it back and NEVER responded to my emails. So their customer service sucked too. Now that the device is out of warranty the HD appeared to have failed. I've read that to replace the HD by Archos costs $200!! They don't make it easy for you to replace yourself because you need their OS installed. I was extremely gentle with so the device failure was not due to undue wear.

I love the Archos product line and have had various units over the last 6 years or so. I love them immensely----until they break. You are then in customer service / product support HELL!!! Archos has the worst customer service I have ever encountered.
Beware. The 605 has a proprietary battery which can only be replaced by Archos. They do not tell you that if your product does manage to last for 3 years or more, you will have NO product support, including replacment of their proprietary batteries. I have this issue with an older model AV480 unit. That is insane. Why make batteries that are not removeable if you will only support them for a few years. If I had known this, I would have purchased backups!
Also, I encountered the same hard drive issue as another user on the AV480 series and went through 3 units and loss of files before they finally admitted that they had a hard drive defect on many units they shipped.
The bottom line is that I love the Archos product line for being on the cutting edge of pvp technology. I want to continue to buy their new releases. I am, however, getting a little gunshy given my unavoidable experiences withthe product support.
