Digital camera reviews of Archos 605 Wi-Fi Portable Media Player (30 GB)

Digital camera Review: Get a cheap laptop/PC
Summary: 2 Stars

All you pay for is the size. I don't know what you could use this for without paying extra for the accessories and add on's?

I paid extra for the web browser and cinema package so I could browse the net and watch videos. I also purchased the power dock (so I can charge it up via the power socket and not to hook it up to my PC). With all these additional extras just to get the thing to work adds to the price.

Charging time is very slow, sound quality is poor. I calculated what I spent on this and it was near enough the same price as a cheap laptop.
Archos need to improve on this device and include the additional extras as standard to make this any good. Nice try no medal!

Digital camera Review: Get an iPod Touch instead
Summary: 3 Stars

This thing is too bulky. And any time you want to do something with it, that'll be $20-30 extra. It's got WiFi, the browser is 30 $%^Y& Dollars!! You want to play an MP4 file, you need the $20 plug in. Oh that video file you put on is using MPEG 2, that'll be $20 please. Wish I could return it. Touch screen is SLOOOOW!

Digital camera Review: Good Buy
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great buy. Basically everything you can think of this thing has.
You can manage your files from the device, the pictures look great, and the dvr feature is awesome. The itouch doesnt have half of the features this has and its less expensive. Get it.

Digital camera Review: Good but.....
Summary: 2 Stars

I've had the Archos 605 30GB since Christmas and I LOVED it. (Past tense)

It has slowly deteriorated. Freezing up, doesn't cooperate with Media player but worst of all the volume doesn't get very loud anymore. I have to have it on MAX volume with the EQ adjusted to play it anywhere. Earphones, car, home stereo...it sucks! Using it on an airplane? Forget about it you'll never hear the sound. I even bought new headphones and it didn't help. It just doesn't get loud enough and I have had others try it to confirm it wasn't just my 40 year old ears going bad. I've even put the same music files onto a cheap MP3 including an Ipod nano and the volume is too loud to go up to max. Something is wrong so I called Archos and sent it to them for repair. They kept it for 12 days and said they found NOTHING wrong with it and reinstalled the software. Then they seemed to have forgotten to ship it back to me until I called everyday for 4 days requesting a tracking number. I still don't have a tracking number and they refused to ship it back to me overnight for my troubles. If/when I finally get my Archos back I hope it is fixed but so far nothing will be worth the trouble of dealing with their customer service.

The unit is great when it works but I would NEVER by one again. I am not an Apple guy but if their product works trouble free, I'd buy it before this one.

Digital camera Review: Good look and feel BUT web app and some other plugins cost extra!
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this player, had it for a week and returned it. I bought a charging kit from Gomadic Car / Auto and Wall / AC Essential Charger Kit w/ Tip Exchange for the Archos 605 - Gomadic Brand

Everything worked well and I was excited to try the browser. When I selected the browser a window popped up saying that this "plug-in" needed ... which costs an extra $30 ... Doh!

Next I tried to use the MP3 player, which is where this device lacks the most. Get this, you have to load a playlist. Otherwise you can either play one music file or all music files. There was no way for me to select by folder (which is all I need), artist, album, nor genre.

Now on to loading a movie, which was a typical video I use with other video players. When I clicked on play it said that it was only supported with an "plug-in" that ... wait for it ... cost extra. There are two types of video plug-in at $20 each. I decided it is not worth it and returned it. I bought it for three reasons which it was lacking in all three areas:
1) Play videos (not many video formats supported, other supported at an extra cost)
2) Browse the web (costs extra)
3) Play MP3s (GUI lacks)

In conclusion...

Pros:
1) It has good look and feel
2) video playback good (when supported)
3) screen is clear and bright
4) keys work well
5) good user interface in general
6) good weight (not too heavy)
7) good battery life

Cons:
1) Web Browser App cost an EXTRA $30
2) Some codecs (video formats like AVI) are not support ... BUT you can add some codes, of course this costs EXTRA of at least $20
3) MP3 player user interface is lacking. I could not find a way to play by folder, artist, genre ... MUST make playlist ahead of time and upload it to the player

cheers
