Digital camera Review: Ahead of the curve, yet, poor hardward quality
Summary: 4 Stars
Pros: 500 gigabyte of portable space for movies, music, pictures, and/or data (Apple, eat your heart out). Android OS allows for many third party applications and many ways to connect to the internet. With the purchase of the Gen 7 DVR station for this product, it expands it's capabilities to include streaming to television via ANY output as well as the capability to record your favorite television shows. Another, quite amazing, feature is it's ability to stream media from a computer on your network to any television in your house within minutes.
Cons: Archos has a reputation for poor hardware quality and I had to return the first unit I bought because it would not charge with a USB cable. I was also troubled that Archos support refused to sell me a new unit and refund the price once they received the defective unit. Ultimately, I chose to deal with Amazon, who kept their customer happy.
Overview: If it's not obvious, this is NOT my first Archos product... and while Archos is plagued with general hardware issues, to me, the capabilities of the Archos 5 Internet Tablet outweigh the risk. There is no other portable media product that offers, anything close to, the storage space available on this unit. Unlike it's predecessors, this product does not require the purchase of several decoders to function. There is one, if you are interested, that allows MPEG-2 video and AC3 audio (DVD) to be played on the unit. However, there are several freeware programs, such as Staxrip, that will allow you to convert unprotected DVD to compatible Archos audio/video formats. Overall, Archos is WAY ahead of it's time in portable media.
