Digital camera reviews of Audio-Technica ATHANC7 Noise-cancelling Headphones

Digital camera Review: BEWARE: No Plastic Repair
Summary: 2 Stars

THE GOOD

The sound quality of the ATH-ANC7 Noise-canceling headphones is quite good. So is the noise cancellation. Yes, they are comfortable, too. And attractive.

THE NOT SO GOOD

The headphones did not work well with two televisions, both of which are around five years old. The phones buzzed loudly when attached to the old TVs, especially with wave cancellation turned on.

THE BAD

The lower plastic sliding section that connects the earphones with the headband first cracked (on both sides), then broke on one side without any undue stress. I did use them a lot, but did not handle them roughly. The cracks began around 18 months after purchase.

THE UGLY

When I sent my headphones in to Audio-Technica U.S., Inc. for repair, they offered me their next generation headphones at a discount, which was roughly the same price I paid in 2008 for the first pair. When I asked if they would instead repair the headphones I had sent them, they replied that they, "do carry ear pads, cables and accessories", but do not repair a plastic headband when it breaks.

I rejected their offer. I later received my broken headphones in the mail, postage paid, without an invoice for repair. At least I was not charged for a repair estimate that was never offered.

The headphones are still working well now that I have covered the broken plastic with masking tape.

As much as I liked these headphones initially, I will buy the next pair from another company. The plastic component of the AUDIO-TECHNICA ATH-ANC7 headphones was simply too easy to break, and impossible to fix.

Digital camera Review: Comfortable and Great Sound
Summary: 5 Stars

Very comfortable over the ear noise canceling headphones. The noise canceling feature works very well, and the sound quality is great.

Digital camera Review: Amazing headphones!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I do a lot of air travel, also I work in a busy and loud office and have to do a lot of technical support over VoIP, so I finally decided to get the tool that would hopefully make my work and travels more enjoyable. I looked at Bose, but the price was quite a bit more for what I was willing to spend on headphones. Then I found Audio-Technica with a lot of positive reviews. I've been using them for a year now and can tell they are truly worth the $100 I spent! No, they do not cancel the noise completely: you will still hear engines and announcements during a flight, you will hear your colleagues in the office, but all the noises go back to the background and they do not bother you so much. If you turn up the music, they almost disappear. It is just what you need in order to relax and fall asleep on the plane or concentrate in a noisy office. Also great for isolating the outside noise during VoIP conversations. The only drawback is that the sound quality drops significantly if you turn off the NC feature, but other than this I LOVE these headphones!!!!

Digital camera Review: Great value for the price
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased these in 2008, and its been nearly 1.5 years and have been so impressed with this that I decided to share my experience.

I owned an original Bose QC headset and I wanted an upgrade to a newer set. The old Bose QC set consisted of a huge noise cancelling unit which made it troublesome to carry onboard.

When looking at replacements, I looked at

1) Case Size
2) Noise Cancelling
3) Sound quality
4) Ability to continue sound after the battery died.

I went to the Bose store, and tried out their Bose QC2 and QC3. They were excellent as usual, but at $299 and $350 it was on the upper echelon of the price range of such sets. Apple had the ATHANC7 as demo units, and I tried them on. While they were nowhere as comfortable as the Bose units, they were priced significantly lower.

Positives of the Audio-Technica ATHANC7

1) The Audio-Technica headphones had a very balanced tone throughout the frequency range, with no real letdowns.
2) Noise Cancelling is excellent. The system drowns out not only ambient noise, but also the hum/drone that is associated with planes/air conditioners/computer fans etc.
3) They did not have the pressure that most Bose headphones seem to have when you turn on noise cancelling
4) They are generally comfortable. The longest I have worn them is 9 straight hours on a transatlantic flight.
5) They work even with the noise cancelling turned off(replicating what would happen when the battery dies)

Negatives

1) Bass is limited. Bose QC2 headphones definitely have a better representation of bass - regardless of whether it is accurate.
2) Sound without turning on noise cancelling is very weak. Although you can hear the sound, the sound is dramatically improved when the system is actually powered on. I have rarely used this with the ATHANC7.
3) Bose QC2s are more comfortable. The leather is softer.
4) The headphone size is barely big enough for my ears.

Overall, for the price, and for the purpose of noise cancelling, this is a great buy. I would caution those with big heads/large ears to try these out for fit before purchasing them. If this unit was a little more comfortable, it would have obtained 5 stars.

Digital camera Review: Audio Technica 4 Star
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased the Audio Technica rather than the Boise which I have had in the past primarily because of the price!! A review I read rated Boise best overall but that was primarily due to how compact the unit was. Having used noise canceling units for years I am very happy with the purchase. The Audio Technica worked well and the sound quality was excellent.
