I've often heard that they are, and to not spend more money on other cords because of it. This S-video cord crushed that theory for me. I had an "el cheapo" cord laying around. I don't even remember where it came from. It made my image look terrible, and pixelated. I thought perhaps S-video just wasn't right for that application, but decided to try another cord (this cord). Now it looks great. A sharp image without the pixelation.
If you don't have a high def service this is the your best option. It's also the best for retro gaming... anything Playstation 2 or older will look better in S-video than component. It's a substantial step up from composite.
