Digital camera reviews of Belkin Mini Surge 3 Outlet Wall Mount with USB ChargerDigital camera Review: I suppose 'Mini' is a subjective term... Summary: 2 Stars
I ordered two of these devices to take traveling with me. I was primarily looking for a way to replace the need for multiple power adapters in my carry-on gadget bag and charge my devices via USB cables. The surge protection and additional outlets were secondary for my needs. With that said, this item may not have been the best choice for me, but from the pictures this 'Mini Surge Protector' appeared to be the answer to my problem.
When I received my package from Amazon I was shocked to see just how big the unit actually was. It weighed 6.6 ounces, and was way too big for my streamlined gadget bag (I travel with a Tamrac Velocity 8x bag 99% of the time). This is more 'checked' luggage friendly than 'carry-on'. Even in a laptop case you're going to need quite a bit of room to fit this unit in.
As for it's performance, it worked just as intended. I had no problems charging my USB gadgets, including my PSP contrary to the previous review on here. For the record, my PSP is the original model and I used a specific charge cable for it (USB to power adapter) as the old PSPs CANNOT charge via USB alone (unlike the new models).
Out of the two units I purchased I did have to return one of the them due to a misaligned USB port. It prevented me from getting a USB cable connected unless I held the cable in place. This may have been fixable, but since I was not happy with the unit I didn't bother trying.
A nice feature of this surge protector is the ability of it to rotate allowing you to align it either horizontally or vertically as not to block additional outlets on the wall.
Had it been smaller and lighter it would've been a perfect addition to any gadget bag, but if you are traveling with minimum available space you might be out of luck. The surge protector is much thicker than the photos let on (check out my user posted photos to see).
Digital camera Review: I've never been so excited about something so cheap! Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of those "how come no one else thought of this?" products. While it might not replace everyone's surge protector, it can certainly be very useful. It also swivels so it doesn't block another wall outlet. Genius.
Digital camera Review: Indispensable Summary: 5 Stars
We've had two of these for about a year, and I'm ordering a third. We take them with us when we travel to give us additional outlets for charging cameras, phones, iPods, etc. At any given time, we usually have one plugged in charging two iPods or phones (via the USB outlets). I leave one at work, and carry one with me everywhere, so I never run out of outlets to charge the laptop, phone, camera, ipod, etc. It has a solid, well-built feel to it, and I haven't seen anything else as compact and attractive.
Digital camera Review: Insufficient USB power output Summary: 2 Stars
I really like this thing, especially when traveling, where hotel power sockets and luggage space are at a premium. It's reasonably compact for what it does (though that could be improved), and the pivoting is essential.
It charges my iPhone 4G and 3G OK, but it won't charge my iPad (iPad just says "not charging". And my Sprint Overdrive 3G/4G flips out when I plug it in, squawking or rebooting constantly. If I plug in the OverDrive AND the iPhone, the iphone starts acting weird too.
All of this is regardless of whether anything is plugged into the AC sockets. I don't have a great way to measure but it seems like the voltages (or more likely, current) aren't in specification for USB.
Digital camera Review: Lame Product Summary: 1 Stars
This product sounded like the ideal solution for charging multiple items when traveling. I was surprised and disappointed when I discovered it was not possible to charge two iPhones at the same time. After a lengthy discussion with a Belkin representative (Very difficult to understand due to limited English skills and satellite connection)I was informed that the unit was working properly but insufficient power was available, through the USB ports, to charge both iPhones at the same time. A lame answer.
