Digital camera reviews of Belkin Mini Surge 3 Outlet Wall Mount with USB ChargerDigital camera Review: Big for travel Summary: 3 Stars
This surge strip was a bit bigger than I anticipated, the picture gives a false impression that the product is small. So it takes up more space than you would think when trying to pack for a trip, and if you're packing for an international trip and plan to use this product with a power inverter, then also include a 3 prong adapter because I don't think many power inverters have 3 prong receptacles. I made that mistake when when I went to plug it in on a recent trip. and was left charging one item at a time.
Digital camera Review: Blew on first use... Summary: 2 Stars
I received this from Amazon today. Unboxed it, plugged into my wall socked in my home. Proceeded to plug in a Logitech diNovo Edge keyboard to charge. Worked fine. Then I plugged in a Plantronics 510 BT headset, *POP* it blew. Electrical smell everywhere. When it popped, I saw a bright flash inside the unit and the "Protected" light went out.
The manual said this happens when the unit sacrificed itself to protect the electronics plugged into it and to call Belkin for a free replacement.
Strange since I've used many power surge strips in this very outlet and all have been fine. Hopefully Belkin stands behind the product and replaces it free. I owned it for a total of 7 minutes before it blew. Kinda scary...
Digital camera Review: Both USB ports don't work at the same time Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this product because I'm a gadget freak, and many gadgets can be powered over USB. I planned on using one USB port for an iPod cable and the other with a USB-mini cable, mainly to charge my iPhone and G1. The extra 3 outlets were a nice extra.
However, the first time I plugged in the Mini Surge and attached my iPhone and G1, the iPhone started power cycling without end. I tried plugging in one first and then the other, and vice-versa, but it would always make the iPhone freak out. So pretty much, you can't use both USB ports at the same time, which completely removes any benefit I wanted from this.
Digital camera Review: Bulky, but still half the size of a standard surge protector Summary: 5 Stars
As an occasional business traveler, packing a surge protector is one of my frequent annoyances. They fit fine in my luggage, but not in my laptop bag, and I still have to carry chargers for my cell phone, phone earpiece, and iPod.
The Belkin 3OUT is the nearly perfect solution to this problem. It's about half the length of a traditional surge protector, and fits nicely in my laptop bag. It also allows me to carry two standard USB cords and charge my smaller mobile equipment. And the rotating plug base makes it easy to plug in and not interfere with other items using an adjacent socket.
Other reviews have rightly noted that it's a little bulky. The width and length are fine; it's the depth of the unit that makes it unwieldy -- it's 2 inches thick, plus another 1¼ inch for the plug and its base. But that's a minimal annoyance to get the portability, surge protection, and USB features.
Highly recommended for anyone who travels with their electronics.
Digital camera Review: Can't beat it Summary: 5 Stars
Works great. Charges all of my usb devices without issue.
Don't trust cheap usb chargers, they can do serious damage to your devices.
This one includes a nice surge protector, which is a huge bonus.
I use it with my TomTom 340s.
