We have just ordered our second unit! The sound is amazing. We have both Bose and Vandersteen speakers in our home systems so we have great sound comparison. I bought a Bose Sounddock for my wife for Christmas to go with her new 20 GB Ipod. Some of the reviews I had read made me concerned about sound quality, but my wife was really excited when she found out that she was getting a Bose. They're supposed to be the best, right? We turned it on, and we were both very disappointed with the sound quality. It sounded like more like speakers in an alarm clock-radio than a $300 unit. We took the Bose back to the store and bought an Altec Lansing inMotion IM7 speaker system for $50 less. The sound was rich and full, and the remote allows you to adjust bass and treble. Very much improved from the Bose. About all that I can say positive about the Bose is that it is a better looking unit than the IM7. This could have been a great unit but as usual there is NO control over the BASS and TREBLE. The less than brilliant Bose engineers think they should have total control over the sound of YOUR music. Maybe someday they will wise up but I doubt it. I returned the unit after 2 days. For an AWESOME set of dedicated IPOD speakers you should get the Altec Lansing new InMotion iM7. I listened to both at Apple store, and felt I needed a better test at home. So I bought both Bose and Apple. My report? Bose sounds a little richer, fuller. Apple has more user control capabilities to tune the sound for more bass, classic, jazz, etc. although none of these seemed to do much. Bottom line, both are good. I moved the Bose to my wife cuz she can't deal with making different settings, I kept the Apple so I could try a few changes in the settings and it was a bit louder and almost equalled the Bose in quality. If my wife told me to swap 'em, I'd be fine with that too. Slight preference for Apple controls and using ipod displays, slight preference for Bose sound richness. Uh, Bose does take up less desk top space. Sorry if I can't tell you that I have a definite pick, but it's a slight edge to the Apple for me (controls, visibility of what's playing) versus a slight sound advantage to Bose. Oh, should all our choices be so good.
