Digital camera reviews of Brother HL-2140 Laser PrinterDigital camera Review: $50 laser printer works great Summary: 5 Stars
FedEx just dropped this off, and from the porch it took about 10 minutes to be printing my first documents. Unbox, stick the toner in there, hook it up to AC power and PC via USB, and let drivers configure automatically. Plug and play babay.
I hope it lasts
Digital camera Review: 1 Year Owner of Hl-2140 Summary: 3 Stars
I've had this printer for about 1 year now. I gets 3 stars because it is a reliable and easy-to-use little printer, but there are some irritating things about it. First let me say that this is the only laser printer I have ever owned, so I won't be comparing it with any other models.
PROS:
1)It is reliable and gets the job done. It hardly ever jams or acts up.
2) The toner is reasonable if you shop around for the best price (Amazon is always competitive, but not necessarily the cheapest if someone else is running a sale). Keep in mind there are two toner cartridge types the tn330 and tn360 - I've only used the extended one (tn360).
3)The starter toner you get actually goes pretty far - I printed close to 1000 copies, maybe more. It is very easy to get set up and operate.
CONS:
1)I have not done a good job at keeping track of how many copies I get out of one of the tn360's, but it often seems to not quite last as long as it should. More importantly, the toner cartridges stop working BEFORE they actually run out of toner. There are sensors on the cartridges that tell the printer the toner is low. You get the warning messages, but the pages you are printing still look fine. Then one day, it says the toner is out. But the last page you printed was perfect. Why? There are sensors on the cartridges that the printer reads. However, there is a work-around of this. Go to You Tube and do a search.
2) Drum replacement. After a few extended TN360 cartridges, I started getting the drum warning light. A new drum costs about what the printer costs.
Bottom line: This printer has a huge hidden cost in the drum replacement, and the toner sensor is a little evil, but it starts off so cheap that it can be worth it. I have not tried any 3rd party toner cartridges or drum replacements, but they are significantly cheaper than Brother stuff. I am thinking of trying one of the drum replacements from a 3rd party *they go for under $60). If I do and it works, it will make the printer a pretty affordable little workhorse. If not, the best option seems to be to just buy a new one, because you get a new drum and starter printer cartridge.
Digital camera Review: 2nd One Summary: 5 Stars
I have the wireless model HL-2140W at my office. At home this model HL-2140 is my second Brother. Works great easy to set up. easy to change cartridge when that time comes. Easy to setup on network when plugged into running computer. Draft, Normal and 1200dpi printing thru properties tab. Ignore the toner light until the printer quits putting out good copies. Toner light has been on for the last 2 months and it's still works great. For the price you can't find a better printer, it's a best buy.
Digital camera Review: A Deal Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this printer when my Brother MFC 8600 started getting stuck in sleep mode. The price was the main factor.
It's very fast, and the print quality is excellent. It handles card stock and envelopes better than the 8600, but only if you make sure it grips the material (makes a little clicking sound).
It has its quirks. When printing a long document, manual two sides, the printer pauses for about three seconds at page 28, and again at page 52, as if it's catching its breath. Small pauses can be detected at other places during the job. Default is spooling the whole job, so there should be no pauses.
I experienced a few feed problems, but I haven't tried better paper to see if that solves the problem. I do fan the paper before placing it in the tray. It's more unwieldy to place paper in the 2140's tray than is the case with the 8600, but the tray does come out easily.
The paper seems quite a bit hotter when it comes out in comparison with the 8600, but it's also much faster. It seems faster than its rated speed. I'm not sure the toner lasts nearly as long as it's supposed to. The cartridge that came with the printer was 1000 pages. I used that and the tone light is on for the TN-360 2500 page cartridge. I'm pretty sure I didn't print seven reams worth of documents, all nothing but text.
All in all, an amazing deal for sixty bucks after rebate. At a hundred bucks, I'd shop around.
Digital camera Review: A Good Little Printer Summary: 4 Stars
Overall, I'm very happy with the quality of this printer and recommend it for anyone who needs a small personal printer. I bought it when my old HP personal laser printer died. It was recommended by my son, was on sale at a great price, and received many favorable reviews on your website. I had some concerns because of the reviews that called it "flimsy" or unable to print envelopes. I use my printer mostly for documents and reports, but I do occasionally use it for correspondence. So far, I've had no trouble printing envelopes and labels, although the procedure is a little awkward. True, it's a bit on the light-weight side, but fine for my home office use and easy for me to move around.
