Digital camera reviews of C Crane CCRadio-SW (Model CSW-TCF)Digital camera Review: Great Purchase!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Maybe I just got tired of looking for an AM radio that would give me what I wanted. I do admit if I would have gotten the CCrane SW, before I tried a few Grundigs, and the GE Superadio III, I wouldnt have wasted so much time and money. Im truly satisfied with this radio. I wouldnt know if it was the best or even near the best, then again you get what you pay for. I do believe for the AM reception, and the FM quality, smooth sound, and beautiful sleek design, you're pretty much getting close to the price of this Radio.
I guess the best thing going for me is I dont have a lot of experience with different brands of am/fm/sw radio, what you dont know wont hurt you. I dont have to beat my brains with comparisons. I love the versatility of the CCrane SW. It helps to know when you pay for something you're getting enough features to feel as though you're getting at least your moneys worth. I can be listen to AM Radio, while look at this beautiful Radio and feel like im listening to an FM soundbite. Not sure with what people are saying about the humming on some of the other reviews. I havent come across station that I was looking for that I couldnt adjust until I got a clear soothing sound.
This Radio is proving another conversationalist companion that accompanys me when im out and about. Though its not a pocketsize, its streamline, and sleek enough to still not be as noticable as the Grundig S350, nor the cumbersome GE Superadio III.
Like I said im not a scholar on am/fm/sw radios, but I truly love this radio (CCraneSW), and would recommend this radio to anyone.
Digital camera Review: Great Radio Summary: 4 Stars
The assembly of the radio is high quality and provides clear AM/FM signals. The short wave made need a bit more band spreader control and could possibly use a BFO for sideband and code. Otherwise the radio is outstanding. I listen to a lot of the old short wave stations that I have not been able to hear in years!
Digital camera Review: Great Radio! Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this radio for myself as a Christmas present, and thought I'd wait until I'd used it for about a month before writing any review of it.
I've been a CCrane customer for a long time, and still own the great CCRadio. In fact, the CCRadio is still going strong after 10+ years of use, so I had no hesitation of buying the CC-SW.
I really like the CC-SW. The backlit keys are extremely easy to read and see in the dark, and the backlit LED is extremely sharp. The controls on it spin nicely, and the buttons work great. The only thing I don't like about the build quality is the carrying handle, but since I don't carry it around, it's kind of a non-issue. I liked the built in recessed handle of the CCRadio, and I like a nice firm heavy handle or a leather/strap carrying handle like Grundigs have. This is thin and feels weak, although I know that it's not and I know that it's basically that unbreakable plastic, so I'm not concerned about it. It just feels like it doesn't belong on that radio.
FM comes in great on it, even without extending the whip antenna. AM is really good, better than most portable radios, I'd say; but it's not as good as the CCRadio for AM. (Get used to that phrase). Shortwave is okay, and that has more to do with my antenna and reception than it does the radio. I've seen videos of this radio doing better things with shortwave reception than I can get at my location. It is very easy to use for SWL though. All bands (AM/FM/SW) have really good sensitivity and selectivity. The major beef I have here is that if you use the FM/SW external radio jack in the back of the radio, you'll get a slight hum on AM. Unplug it, it's gone.
The Gain/Tone/Bass/Volume controls feel really good. The overall sound quality is very nice, better than most radios, but... not as good as the CCRadio. Battery life is also excellent. I don't know how many hours I've clocked on it, but after a month I'm still on the original batteries (using 4 D's).
If you're looking for a good sized, solid performing portable with shortwave, I can't suggest a better radio than this one. If shortwave isn't what you're after, but are mainly looking at a good AM/FM radio, spend the extra $20 and grab a CCRadio 2. The CC-SW is a fantastic buy at this price though, and is worth it.
Digital camera Review: Great Reception!! Summary: 4 Stars
I live in a multi unit condo complex which has lots in the way of electronic noise. Needless to say, AM radio is very difficult to receive due to all the external interference. Thankfully, the CC radio has solved the problem! I am able to get crystal clear reception at any time without worrying whether my neighbors are using their electronic equipment which can create unwanted obstacles to reception. I was able to 'plug and play' pretty quickly to enjoy talk radio at its best. Lots of ablity in the way of buttons and knobs to adjust the sound quality too. All in all, I am very satisfied with this purchase
Digital camera Review: Great cousin of the CC Radio Summary: 4 Stars
I've been a fan of the original CC Radio Plus for a few years... but now the latest addition to the family is rising up the ranks.
The CC Radio SW, adding shortwave but removing the TV & Weather band, is as good (or better) than its CC-cousin. With many of the same features, incl., lighted dial, alarm & snooze functions, as well as terrific AM reception...and excellent sound, it outperforms most portables of similar size. It has many of the same extras as the Grundig S250, incl., an AM RF Gain knob. Also, separate switches for local & distant AM reception, in addition to operating on 2 types of batteries!! Either 4 AA's or 4 'D size. When plugged-in to the AC adapter, it has the ability to charge the batteries. This of course is only useful if you're using rechargeable cells in the unit. I haven't had this long enough to give a comment on battery usage, although if the key-pad lights are used too often, that will help to drain them quicker. The tuning ability is excellent. The large knob is easy to control and the ability to switch between slow & fast tuning (plus locking it on a frequency) is a nice addition. Another plus; it's very lightweight, and the built in (pop up)handle makes for easy transport.
The only gripes I have is that the small function buttons are a bit difficult to decipher at first due to the tiny print, and I wish there was a way to "lock out" the backlight display when tuning stations, on battery-power... like there is on the original CC.
If you like the CC Radio... you'll like this. Or, if you already have a Grundig, or similar brand, you may want to try the CC Radio SW!
