Digital camera reviews of CDVU02IP / POV CDVU02IP / POV POINTOFVIEW WEB CAMERADigital camera Review: A great value for the price Summary: 5 Stars
I've now gone through a good dozen of webcams, and that's one of my keepers.
Here's why:
It's the only one that'll enable me to sell my stuff on eBay effectively, chat, and travel without worrying. Those are really hard qualities to find in a webcam.
Pluses:
- Great macro, under 2 inches. I sell bracelets on eBay, and to increase traffic and bids, I put up videos of my bracelets. So I have to get close to it to show the intricate design. That's where 99% of webcams fail... and this one triumphs. You adjust the manual focus to macro, and tah-dah! The world can see my beautiful beads and how well they're arranged.
- Great design and portability. I always move around when I chat. Sometimes, I want to show something on the floor, my cat sleeping, what not. So this is pen shaped: pick it up, point, and you're done. No weird shape, no weird nothing. Point, and you're done.
- Cool off-button. Admit it - when you're chatting for a long time, you end up doing something else. You have to go pee, you have to answer the phone. I think it's better I don't share these little weird things with my friends. So I just switch the camera to off without having to log out or restart anything. When I'm done with my private stuff, turn it back on, and that's it!
- Very, very reliable. I travel a lot, so my webcam is how I keep in touch with friends + fam. This is the only webcam that's held up over 30 days in suitcases and briefcases without breaking. It's easy to store, unlike a Logitech (they have the weird bent thing). You can put it in a cell phone pocket on your briefcase, or next to your computer without fearing it'll break in the plane. And that's awesome, especially at that price range!
- Advanced features for Skype, which is what I use it with. You can send snapshots in an instant to the other person, and do all kinds of cool stuff!
- TV resolution (640 x 480), which is the max any computer can deal with during chat.
- $39.99!!!! It's in my budget!!! :-)
Minuses:
- Not totally compatible with Mac yet. Works with Yahoo Messenger on it, but not iChat (the only 2 things available on mac right now)
- Lighting conditions must not be too dark. Ok, I know, no one chats in pit dark, that's just an eye killer. But I thought I'd mention it.
- White balance seems off at times. It looks like the white is a little off on weird bulbs (I have old lamps). TIP: go into the control panel and do manual exposure/white balance. It'll take you 5 seconds. I found that manual white balance and exposure are better with all webcams because otherwise your webcam spends its time adjusting it, meaning the other person sees you in shades of white and grey. Adjust it at the beginning of your session and you're fine - the other person will have a uniform color panel.
