Digital camera reviews of Canon BG-E2N Battery Grip for Canon 20D, 30D, 40D & 50D Digital SLR Cameras (Retail Package)

Digital camera Review: Definitely worth the money
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm a photo enthusiast and now that I have this, I'll never take it off. Battery life is great (it appears to use one at a time, not both at the same time). It offers landscape positioning controls, which is huge for me. I tell everyone with a DLSR that they need a pack like this.

Digital camera Review: Dissapointing Overall
Summary: 2 Stars

PROS: Extra long battery life, nice for vertical shooting, gives you a bigger grip on the camera. This unit DOES include the plastic AA battery tray so that you can run your camera off of 6 AA batteries. No need to purchase it separately.

CONS: My first one broke. From day one, it always attached a bit loosely. Then the fastener wheel got jammed one day and I was BARELY able to get it off the camera, so I exchanged it for another one.

Now I'm on my 2nd unit and the fastener wheel spins a little loose when tightened all the way, just like like it did on the first unit I sent back. HOPEFULLY it won't jam up again. It attaches to the 40D more solidly than my first one, but it doesn't feel nearly as tight at my BG-E3 did when I used to own the XTi/400D.

My second unit also holds the left battery so loosely that the white plastic tab BARELY locks the battery in place and will allow the battery to slide out and fall if tilted downward with the battery door open. Very dissapointing, and I might be sending it back to C*non for warranty repair.

Given the high price, I think it's disappointing that the grip isn't made with more solid metal parts instead of plastic. Apparently the gear inside the unit is made with plastic teeth! It feels almost like a cheap toy in my opinion. It just feels flimsy overall. Another problem I've had is sometimes the vertical shutter button won't work unless I hold it down for 1-2 seconds. I press the shutter button firmly and simply nothing happens. Other times it works fine.

Digital camera Review: Don't know how I got along without it.
Summary: 5 Stars

If you don't have a battery grip and you shoot a lot of sports or other Portrait-orientation shots, you don't know what you are missing. As a "prosumer" sports photographer, I was always having to fix the rotation of action shots taken by turning the camera sideways. No more. And they extra battery means I pretty much never have to worry about running out in the middle of a day of shooting.

My only warning is that I sometimes accidentally slip the on-off switch into the "off" position, making the shutter release stop working. The switch is right below the on-off switch on the camera.

If you get a third battery and a battery charger with a car adaptor, you can literally shoot all day.

Digital camera Review: Everything it is supposed to be.
Summary: 5 Stars

It makes the camera grip in hand very solid and quite large. Fits well, is stable and stays tight. Looks good and feels good. Expensive and very high quality, just what you expect from Canon.

Digital camera Review: Excellent Product
Summary: 5 Stars

Makes life sooo much easier when shooting portrait for a long period of time, especially with a spot for a second batter, or you can replace both normal batteries with 6 AA's, haven't tried it as I have two 40D batteries, but neat option nonetheless.

If you do need a spare battery look at SterlingTek, *very* popular site among photographers for their cheap (but as good or even better than Canon, higher mAH) batteries.
