Digital camera reviews of Canon CLI-8PC Photo Cyan Ink Tank

Digital camera Review: This is second most used color. Comparison of usage of different colors by Canon printer
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a Canon Photo Printer which takes six CLI-8 Canon Ink Cartridges. The cost of each individual ink cartridge ranges from around $12.50-15 (on Amazon) to 18.99 in Staples. So no matter how you buy the genuine Canon Ink Cartridges keeping yourself ready to print photos is expensive.

You can get a better per cartridge of you buy them in Canon CLI-8 4-Color Multipack Ink Tanks. In that case each individual cartridge is a little less expensive. Canon package CL-8C (Cyan), CL-8M (Magenta), CL-8Y (Yellow), and CL-8BK (Black) as a pack ($40-44 on Amazon). When cartridges are sold in packs you might think those colors are used at similar rates... but that is not so.

I have kept track of the usage of the cartridges over a long period of time and would like to share these results with you.

Number of cartridges used

CL-8M Magenta = 5

CL-8Y Yellow = 8

CL-8B Black = 6

CL-8PC Photo Cyan = 6

CL-8PM Photo Magenta = 8

CL-8C Cyan = 4

My usage shows that yellow is used the most, followed closely by Photo Magenta, followed next by Black and Photo Cyan, and trailed by Cyan and Magenta. Note that I have a laser printer that I used for text otherwise the usage of the Black Cartridge would have been a lot higher.

I buy most of my color photo ink on-line from Amazon. However now that Staples began (again) accepting CL-8 cartridges for Staples Rewards in their recycling empty cartridges program, I wanted to analyze my usage to see which cartridges I should buy at Staples using my Staples Rewards.

My original thought was to buy Canon CLI-8PC Photo Cyan Ink Tank and Canon CLI-8PM Photo Magenta Ink Tank since they don't come in a pack. But given the usage chart above, it is clear that I should buy extra Yellow and Photo Magenta.

Digital camera Review: Use only original when you want the best
Summary: 5 Stars

I've just upgraded to a Pro9000 from my 'old' i900D and what a difference right out of the box. The dedicate green and red cartridges make a huge difference. I've tried refillables before and will never again deal with the hassle and mess to save a few pennies and get inferior results. To those who give it one or two stars, read the literature to see what cartridges work with your particular printer. The "Photo" cartridges are not designed for your small 4 or 5 cartridge printers. Remember, you're rating the product, not your expertise!

Digital camera Review: Watch your compatibility!!
Summary: 1 Stars

Uh, somehow I ended up thinking this would be compatible with my Canon iP5200R when Amazon was out of the regular cyan (CLI-8C) a little while back. Vaguely recall it even turning up when I searched Amazon for the printer's inks /the CLI-8C.

Just found out the CLI-8PC won't work as a substitute. Nope. Zero. Not compatible. A couple printers like the iP6600/iP6700D only.

Looks like Amazon's cleaned up whatever made the CLI-8PC come up prior for those searching for the CLI-8C and particular printer's inks. Now if Canon could put an explicit warning in CLI-8PC listings not to be silly and think "Photo Cyan" can be substituted for "Cyan".

(And oh. When I'm printing 95% black text, why the heck do all my expensive color inks get drained too? I thought I had the PGI-5Bk cartridge dedicated to that use alone, but that's another story. Does make me even more darn unhappy with buying this unnecessarily in the first place though.)

Digital camera Review: Whom do you trust?
Summary: 4 Stars

Amazon either recommended or sent this CLI-8PC to me in error and, although Amazon's description of the product includes the personalized assurance that the cartridge will fit my Pixma IP4200, the Canon site begs to differ. I'm begging to differ with Amazon's judgment on this one, and sending it back in exchange for the CLI-8C, which is the cartridge I've always used and which Canon and Amazon can at least agree is compatible with my printer. An instance of too much helpful coaching. (All I'd like to know is what the blazes does the "P" stand for?)

Digital camera Review: Why give 1 star because you order the wrong item
Summary: 5 Stars

It kills me how someone can write a negative review for something when it was their stupidity that caused them to order the wrong item. If you are unsure of what to buy, visit Canon's USA site for a list of compatible inks for your printer.
