Digital camera Review: 35mm Film is not really seen at 9600dpi - it's more like 1600dpi

I bought this scanner for one reason: the new specification of 9600dpi 35mm scanning. I have an inexpensive 3600 dpi dedicated 35mm film scanner as well as the previous CanoScan 8800F.
The 8800F claims 4800dpi film scanning resolution but in reality the images only look sharp when downsized to one third the resolution (1600dpi) - this suggests that Canon is counting the three RGB elements of the scanning element as individual dots of the DPI. Fine, that's what I expected from the 8800F. The 8800F does not have enough resolution (in either the scanning element or optics) to show sufficient detail for my needs and the 8800F also fails to resolve film grain, while my 3600 dpi film scanner can resolve the grain of 50 speed film.
Then came the 9000F claiming 9600dpi optical resolution for film scanning. I had hoped that the usable resolution would be at least one-third of this - 3200dpi would be enough for my needs. But no, I can promise you that the 9000F provides no more resolution than the 8800F. None! The images still need to be down sampled to 1200-1800 dpi in order to appear properly sampled. I can only conclude that Canon is dishonest with the new specification, and this is very disappointing. Of course, if the scanner really did provide 3200 real dpi for film it would be an unexpected advance for flatbed film scanning. However, the 9000F is no such thing.
