Digital camera reviews of Canon Directional Stereo Mic (DM 50) for Camcorders with the Advanced Access ShoeDigital camera Review: Don't Record via HV20 Summary: 3 Stars
Since you are still recording directly into the audio channel of the HV20/30/40 etc, you will only be getting a bit of an extension on the distance it records. The quality is not improved any. If you're just looking to extend the range and understand how a shotgun mic records (As opposed to several other types of mics: Every scenario needs a different mic) then this mic is fine. I would however, recommend getting a Zoom H4n and record audio off camera and sync later in post. The quality is just WAY better. Save your cash, get something to record off camera. If you need to keep everything ON camera I would recommend the Rode Stereo/Video mic. Bigger, bulkier but it cuts down on wind noise etc way better at the same price.
Digital camera Review: Excellent Mic Summary: 5 Stars
I used this mic on my Canon GL2 to videotape a choir. At first I was worried about the noise around. It turned out greater than I expected ! It eliminated most of my unwanted sound and noises in the background. Sound quality is also excellent to me. Highly recommended item.
Digital camera Review: Exceptional Consumer MIC Summary: 4 Stars
This microphone is adequate for close to mid range pickup depending on the noise level. It has three settings, one that emulates a shotgun Mic and the other two are for stereo wide and narrow. I own the Canon HV-20 and this MIC virtually eliminates the tape mechanism sound!!! It comes with a wind screen that works well under still to mildly windy conditions. The DM-50 runs of off the camcorder battery which eliminates the weight of having two AA batteries.
Digital camera Review: Fantastic Summary: 5 Stars
I just love it! It does a great job of selectively and clearly capturing what I want to record.
Digital camera Review: For the intermediate videographer Summary: 5 Stars
I enjoy using this product. We film youth sports (specifically football) using a Canon Vixia HV30. Our biggest problem in the past was the overwhelming sound of wind in our production. The addition of this Directional Stereo Mic solved this problem perfectly. I love the ease of installation and the fact that it's powered by the camera's battery. Just attach it to the Advanced Accessory Shoe of the camera, fasten it with the circular clamp for stability and you're off! It really does make a difference and definitely worth the price tag.
