Great lens - does everything that's advertised. I'm a beginner and am just learning to get my camera off auto, but this lens has taken some great pics so far :) It's much heavier than the kit lens and a ton heavier than my 50mm, but it does have a good zoom. Shame on Canon. I got this lens as part of a package when I bought a Canon 40D camera. I thought it would be great with IS and all, but I was sadly mistaken. The images are soft and the IS doesn't really help much. Fortunately I still had a Sigma 17-70mm lens that I got for my Canon 350D and I use this lens most of the time because I get the IQ that I am used to getting and the Canon 28-135mm lens is just a great disappointment. I wish I had spent the extra $200 on an alternate lens. I hope someone will want to buy this Canon lens from me. It's the only Canon lens I own and I am sorely disappointed with it. I really liked the lens but I received a bad copy and had to send it back. The front element was loose so it jerked when focusing each picture. The lens is a bit heavy but seemed very solid. I bought this lens to use on a Digital Rebel and a Canon Elan II. What sold me on it was the image stabilization feature which allows photographers to take pictures in lower light without requiring a tripod for stabilization. The image stabilization feature works extremely well. I tested it on my first outing with this lens by taking it to 6th street in Austin just as the sun was going down. I took several sets of pictures, some with IS on and some with it off. I also took seven or eight comparison sets where I shot first without IS and then with it. This system really works, and pictures shot with the Image Stabilizer were much sharper in lower light.What has also impressed me about this lens is the image quality. It is definitely a step above the Digital Rebel kit lens, and shows much finer detail than that lens. It also shows better contrast. There is a very slight amount of chromatic aberration, but it's only noticable on very close inspection, and is no worse than any other zoom lens I've used. Overall, this is an excellent addition to any Canon user's outfit.
