Digital camera reviews of Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera LensDigital camera Review: ¡Muy buen lente! Summary: 4 Stars

Decent lens; slow focusing, however.
Packaging was minimal and definately could/should have been better. B&H much better and basically same pricing.

Ok, well there's no big secret here, this lens has some of best glass, but the absolute worst construction of any lens ever. However that being said there are a few things you can do to insure that your lens doesn't snap into two, like I'm sure you've read about happening.
One, buy some black electrical tape and wrap it around the outside of the barrel. Make it thick, so when you do drop it lightly onto double padded carpetting from 3 inches up, it doesn't break... maybe.
Second.. buy two, so when one does break, you can just pop on the next one and keep shooting. It's worth it.
Three.. keep it in a good case, with lots of padding, but make sure that padding doesn't shed off because it WILL get behind the glass, this lens is not sealed well at all.
This lens, in my mind, is a 10 and is worth buying for the 75-85 dollar price here on Amazon. If you have the cash you are obviously better off buying the 1.4, but if you just want to expirement, or don't have 3-4 hundred dollars laying around, buy this lens.
You can't afford not to
Digital camera Review: 100% worth the money Summary: 4 Stars
I got this lens a few weeks ago. At the time, I was hoping to get it in under 3 days because I had clients that wanted to shoot a music video in the streets of a city at night as well as in a few parties that naturally, would be very dark. I needed a f1.8 or lower lens that could shoot in the required low light location that wasn't going to kill my budget. I picked this lens up and it showed up to my doorstep on the 3rd day, right before I packed up to take the 2 hour drive. On the way I rode with my client and I fiddled around with my new lens to get a feel for it before actual shooting. Initially, I liked it. The auto focus was good, the image quality of the mountains I was driving through was spectacular, and I could still keep the ISO down near 100 as we got closer to sunset. I already knew it was going to perform well as far as low light goes, but I wasn't sure about the shakyness of it because it is not an IS lens and we were going to be walking so I couldn't throw a tripod under it. We got there and I started shooting and it was a lot more steady then I had expected. I followed the group for about an hour just walking around until the party was starting. We went to the party and the ONLY light source was christmas lights, and that was it. It was really dark. I bumped the camera to f1.8 and ISO to 1600 (the maximum I will shoot at on the T2i due to 3200 and up gets a little noisy). The video was still fairly dark, but you could still very easily make out what was happening. I'm quite sure that If I had my 18-55mm lens on for instance, I would have seen nothing. About this time I noticed the first problem with this lens which is simply me not thinking through the specs that are listed. It's 50mm, which pretty much means if someone is standing 4 feet away from you, you're still only going to be able to frame their face and thats about it. No wide angle shots whatsoever with this lens, which made it hard in a party where it was packed body tight. So if I wanted to shoot a picture of a group, I had to ask them to step back a good 7 feet, which wasn't going to happen because more people would just fill in the vacant area. So for this party, I just shot some simple scenes from a distance because I didn't have much choice.
So onto the next party of the night, It was a blacklight party, so their was no source of light except black lights everywhere, which I thought might do some weird effects to the final image but it actually just put a really wicked blue feel to it. So with no actual light, it was really dark. The lens really came through here for a few reasons. First and foremost was I could see what was happening clearly regardless of how low light the party was. 2ndly, To put more of a focus on my clients, using a f1.8 could make them in focus, but the people 1 foot behind them completely blurred out for some intense depth of field shots. The bad thing was, once again, I had to have them move about 5 feet away and still the only thing I could frame was their head. So I literally jammed myself into a corner to get as far back as possible to compensate. while jammed up in this position and trying to record on manual focus, I realized problem number 2. With a steadycam and camera, jammed up in a corner, focusing without getting my fingers in the shot just wasn't going to happen. This lens should probably REQUIRE a follow focus or focus ring because the focus ring it has now is literally right at the glass of the camera. So while they were constantly swaying back in forth to the music, I tried to stay in focus and it was very tough.
So now that my story is over, I'll talk a little bit about the lens outside my situation. I LOVE this lens for outdoor portrait photography. It let's me stay far away from my subject but still frame them nicely. It also let's me focus on them and have the background REALLY blurred out. (the DOF on any lens under f1.8 should be amazing). The build quality seems a little cheap, A little more plasticy and fragile then my other lenses. The autofocus on this lens is fast and responds well. The only problem I've had with is is if someone is 3 feet away and u try to focus it, It just won't focus to anything because it doesn't have that much of a focus distance. Taking a few steps back and focusing again always works.
Overall though, for the price, you can't lose. A month later and I still use this lens a lot. I don't regret this purchase one bit. Worth every penny.
Digital camera Review: 1000th review! Summary: 5 Stars
i bought this lens on a trip in taiwan a few months ago as my first lens upgrade from the 18-55mm stock lens. the image quality whether you use it wide open (at f/ 1.8) or stopped down really blows away the stock lens (of course).
since then, i've also bought the 24-70mm F/2.8L IS USM which is more than 10 times this price (which is a fantastic lens by the way) but this remains a favorite lens of mine when i need a fast lens for fast action or very low light.
as with all primes, you'll be using "sneaker" zoom but i think that it's worth it when you need top quality images.
i agree with other reviewers that this lens' construction quality is not at all top notch. it really feels like a toy, but if all you're looking for is great-looking pictures (with great bokeh when you open up) then this will do it for you.
yay 1000th review!
